Looking for Guesthouse/Bars/Restaurants Right on the Beach

Hi guys. My girlfriend and I have been in Vietnam a couple of weeks (in Saigon) and this morning took the train up to Nha Trang. We've only been here a few hours and I'm hoping it grows on me in the morning, but so far it doesn't seem like our kind of place. It feels like a bit of a grubby town with a beach across a busy road. Not exactly paradise.

I don't often get to visit the beach so I have little frame of reference, but we're looking for a place similar Koh Samet in Thailand: a decent beach with guesthouses, bars and restaurants directly on the sand. I don't want to hear thumping dance music from every bar, but I'd happily succumb to cliche and hear some Bob Marley :) Is there anything like that in Vietnam? We're thinking about Hoi An, but I can't tell if it's what we're looking for.

Thanks for your help :)

Vietnam is like Britain: it has beautiful beaches, but you don't really go there exclusively for a beach holiday.

It sounds like Phu Quoc is what you're looking for, but that's going to require a flight or a fairly lengthy overland journey. Closer to your location is Mui Ne, which is so-so, although it sounds like it's better suited to your tastes. See if the travel agencies in Nha Trang can arrange a bus there.

I personally didn't enjoy the beach at Mui Ne all that much. But it's relaxing and peaceful and has some nice natural features in the surrounding areas.

Mui Ne is ok..... Not my favourite place.

Check if Vietnam Air has any promotions for Phu Quoc. You might get lucky.

Check Jungle Beach at http://www.junglebeachvietnam.com/welcome.html
It's 700-odd km north of Nha Trang. The owner can let you know the easiest way to get there.
