I second taking your hiking boots on the plane. last year on trek to Gokyo and back to Phaplo my friend's luggage never showed. We loaned him what we could and ended up buying all the rest of his gear in Namche at the market. We tracked his luggage every chance we had after leaving kathmandu. Each time we called the luggage was in a different country and was sent on a trip around the world and after five weeks on the trail never showed up. in fact he never received it even after returning the the U.S. Luckily he did wear his hiking boots on the plane so everything else was secondary.16

Scoodly: actually I've been half-worried for a while and yes when I saw that you had lost your bags then...uh oh.
I checked with the Indian airline and it was in fact 7 kg hand baggage.
But that's ok as it's my sleeping bag and my merino stuff I want to take with me in the cabin.

which means they can't send something falling to bits

Europe has strict rules regarding air safety and a well-maintained black list (http://ec.europa.eu/transport/modes/air/safety/air-ban/doc/list_en.pdf) cowantimmy12. It's only that Aeroflot had with 127 crashes quite a repution, as have the old Tupulevs (http://www.airdisaster.com/cgi-bin/airline_detail.cgi?airline=Aeroflot). As far as I can find, no significant one happened after 1998. Statistically the same risk % (or non-risk %) as any other airline, I assume.19
Have you booked your flights already?I've travelled from Stockholm to Himalaya twice within the last year,both times via Delhi. Then I booked separate flights with local (Indian) airlines. Much cheaper than booking direct flight Stockholm - Kathmandu. You can save at least SEK 1500 that way.
Aeroflot is a top airline now, better than most major European airlines. It's not what it used to be in the 80/90s. I considered Aeroflot too but they had poor connection time in Moscow. I flew with Qatar as they had the best fares and connection time Stockholm-Delhi. They're voted worlds best airline the last two years.

Ok I've also heard that Aeroflot was a bad airline with old airplanes and pilots drinking etc.but that must have been in the old communist time?
Now we're going on an airbus so should be ok I think? And they seem to be very generous with how much baggage you can take with you. You could even take a bouquet of flowers. And umbrellas.
Yes I've already booked my flight. Long time to wait in Delhi but suppose I will be busy trying to find my suitcase;)

Hi!I was in Nepal in 2009. Flew with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul.
2 out of 3 bags were left behind in Istanbul. Took them 2 days to reach Delhi.
It's good idea to stay few days in Delhi before heading out to Nepal. Just in case baggage is late.
Our connecting flight ended in Delhi so good thing we took those few days in Delhi.
And another thing: When we got to Kathmandu airport (via Jet Lite) we found out one out of 3 bags was late. :) Good thing they put it on next plain 1 hour later.

Turkish Airlines?I flew with them recently to Japan (and back) with stopover in Istanbul. No problems.
I was curious as they've been voted the best European (!?!) airline of the year. Baggage handling is one of the most important criteria in the prestigeous survey made by Skytrax.
Anyway, it's a bit disappointing, that the best European airline is actually Asian.
World's best airline is Asian too. Qatar Airlines.

Thanks, I suspected here would be lots of stories about lost baggage.Ok this is my plan.
1.I'll take an old suitcase and put the rucksack in there, together with things I can buy in Nepal if lost.
In that way, nobody can say oh your bag is delayed because of the straps got entangled or it was badly wrapped up or whatever.
The suitcase I can store at the hotel when out trekking.
2. The other things I will put in a cabin size duffle bag I just bought. Super light weight, 80 gram. Which means I can put 6920 grams of things in there! Almost everything:) and when out walking, the duffle bag can work as ay dry bag inside my rucksack.
And when getting on the plane I will wear my walking shoes and other clothes I want to wear while trekking.
Double check at every stop where my bag is.
And I also googled Aeroflot so I know that the take off from Moscow will be a close to death experience.;)

@Fieldgate: no company is flawless.Last year when I was returning from India to Croatia (Turkish Airlines), I stuck in Istanbul. They cancelled at least 3 flights that day: to Croatia, Poland and Yemen. It was a chickfight at transfer desk. :)
I had to sleep in Istanbul one day (Turkish Airlines covered it). I don't know the reason why flights have been cancelled. I know for sure it was not due to weather conditions. I heard rumors they cancel flight sometimes if plain is not full enough, but I can't confirm that. Only rumors.
This year I flew in India with Qatar Airlines. They are good, no doubt. Still, 2 bags were left behind in Doha when returning from Delhi to Zagreb. Arrived the next day.
The point is: no matter how good and safe company claims to be, baggage sometimes get stuck. You should be prepared for that.
