Honeymoon in Athens, Santorini and Mykonos

Hey Guys,

My fiance and I are planning to travel to Greece in May 2013 for our honeymoon. I have done quite a bit of research on the places and islands there but am a lil scared with the planning n all since this is the first time we are travelling so far and away from India. We dont want to go with the tours agencies as they appear to be costlier than travelling independently.

We plan in arriving in Athens and touring there for a couple of days including a day tour to Delphi before moving on to Myokonos.A couple of days there when we also visit Delos island and then onto Santorini for the end of our trip. i want Santorini to be the last destination i wana save the best part till the end.
My doubts are:
1) Are there any night ferry services from ATHENS - MYKONOS and MYKONOS- SANTORINI and SANTORINI - ATHENS so we can save time by avoiding having to travel during the day?
2) I read a forum here saying Mykonos is way overrated and Naxos could be a much better alternative. Is it worth changing Mykonos to Naxos.
3) Also what are the kinda prices we will pay for food n all at a decent place there?
Thank You so much.

You won't have a problem making your own arrangements, especially in May, which is only the start of the summer tourist season. The ferries on the routes you have chosen run mostly during the day, although there are sometimes ferries from Rhodes stopping at Santorini around midnight en route to Pireaus. Recommend you save your Athens sightseeing for the end of the trip to give you a buffer against ferry cancellations.

Mykonos and Santorini are the two most expensive islands, so swapping Mykonos for Naxos will save money. On Naxos you can have a nice meal with wine for €30-40 for the two of you, although there are both cheaper and more expensive options. Mykonos has some very expensive restaurants, but there are more economical ones as well. Check the prices on the menu by the entrance before you sit down for a meal.

The ferry schedule for may is not out yet. Generally there are only morning ferries or fast speed between Mykonos and Santorini. But check sometime in February on http://www.gtp.gr/RoutesForm.asp or here where all updates of ferry schedules will be announced: http://www.danae.gr/ferries-greece.asp
Here is also a quite good site for more general info: http://greekido.com/greek-island-guide

Yes, to Naxos! But that's for me who lives in Santorini since 20 years! YOU might like to visit Mykonos if it is your first time in Greece.... But Naxos IS a much more traditional island with many traditional villages to visit, while Mykonos is more or less made up for tourists. Many will say this for Santorini also and of course some part of Santorini ARE touristic. But still one can find nice, relaxing traditional villages here also where the old (and young) are still sitting around gossiping (or playing).

If you go to http://www.booking.com/ you will find very good deals in May! Choose a hotel with breakfast included to save some money if you wish.

Budget: If you want to live ruff you CAN make it on 50 euros per day and person, more comfortable 100 and extra comfortable 150 euros! Athens and Naxos will be cheaper then Santorini and Mykonos even more expensive!

Thanks Thrym and INGELALEX for your kind suggestions. It seems Naxos will be a better option than Myokonos to save money but some people also advice that if one is a first time visitor to Greece, Myokonos must be visited.

Anyhow, INGELALEX, you said you have been living in Santorini for quite some time now.Can you suggest some affordable sharing rooms for 2.

Thanks so much.....

Can't think why people think Mykonos should not be missed. It is expensive and touristy and there are plenty of other lovely islands.

Go to http://www.booking.com/, add your prefered rate on the left side and it will come up many places. Or check out http://www.pensionstella.gr/ a small pension in Karterados only 15 min walk to Fira and the main station. Also http://www.booking.com/hotel/gr/villa-evgenia-www-villaevgenia-gr.en.html in Kotochori is very good! Youn find it on tripadvisor if you want to read more.
