A free day in Phnom Penh

Hey,

Having spent a few days wondering through the streets of phnom penh i came across something that intrigued me an advert to volunteer for the day with choice charity, help out for the day starting at 9am and ending at 4pm, $5 for travel costs. I already had my next week planned out but knew i would be back in phnom with some free time in a week or so and having already done all the main tourist draws decided to give it ago.

I will try and keep this short and sweat
So i went along to the and met the guys (a friendly bunch of ex-pats) and off we went to there base on the outskirts of phnom penh. Found myself immediately playing football with a group of kids after being shown around the centre. From there we dropped a group of children home from school and started the water run delivering safe drinkable water to villages without the luxury of mains water. Then back to base camp for lunch, then to help stock up a new medical cabinate. Followed by another school run (without these school runs i seriously doubt whether the children would be in education). The last trip of the day was off to a different village to give a mother some medicine for her sick child, then home.

Soo im not going to say ive helped change the world but it was very refreshing to see good people making a difference and nice to see a different side to cambodia however shocking.

Its a pretty good $5 day trip

For anyone interested, ive not covered half of the project the charity are involved in take a look for yourself http://www.choice-cambodia.org/

Cheers

Dan

Looks like a worthwhile charity from their website, just wait and see what some of the local expats on here have to say about them. I hope its all good, as there are too many bad charities working in 3rd world countries.

I have a few friends that are involved with choice , and as far as i'm concerned it's without a doubt one of the better Charity's if not the best currently operating in and around Phnom Penh ..

No NGO overheads such as an accommodation compound to pay for or luxury Lexus's to maintain and of course no over inflated NGO wages to pay either ...

Just some good expats giving their free time to help run a worthwhile Charity .

Great to hear that, after looking at the website I felt it was a sincere bunch of people doing what they could to help the less fortunate.

As i stated the trip cost $5 and not a cent more old boy, I dont give praise willy nilly but just felt i was a worthwhile charity and deserving of some good feedback,

Cheers

Don't worry The Doc's quite wrong on this one .. A bad attempt at humour i think !!

Everybody that i know that volunteers for Choice is certainly far from been a skint English Teacher ..

I know at least three or four long term expats that do impeccable and valuable work for choice and for the Doc to say otherwise is quite frankly insulting ..

I welcome you to come back here and prove otherwise Doc !! Otherwise don't slag off people that you don't know ..

As i have said with out a doubt one of the better Charity's working in and around Phnom Penh ...

Do a bit of research and make your own mind up !!

But it's better too give your time to choice than keeping some scamming NGO's in Comfort ...

sorry, i couldnt be tossed with the hoopla that i might (will) cause.
matter of fact comments regarding my experiences with choice are probably better left for familiar faces, over a cold Angkor as we watch the world float down the river.

if it helps... choice is o.k... not a skint english teacher within cooee, for sure!

Well if you had anything of substance, produce it, if not then dont make accusations. If you do know something and you dont make a point of sharing it, it then means that you are quite happy for it to continue.
