Rate/Slate/Advise our LA - GC - LV - San Fran itinerary Please

Hello USA travellers/residents/afficionados,
My wife and I are travelling to LA in december and I have been trying to put together an itinerary. I was wondering if you might add your 2 cents to the master plan! We have a car hired.
Dec 1st - Land in LA 7.15pm. Stay the night in LA
Dec 2nd - Hollwood sightseeing etc. Stay the night in LA
Dec 3rd - Check out muscle beach in the morning. Drive to south rim of Gran canyon (8 hours)!. Stay at Gran Canyon
Dec 4th - visit Gran Canyon, go wow. Drive to Vegas. Stay in Vegas
Dec 5th - Vegas, stay in Vegas
Dec 6th - Leave Vegas early, drive through Death Valley, cut west across towards bakersfield. Stay somewhere round here for the night.
Dec 7th - Continue west to hit the coast near San Luis Obispo then drive up highway 1 and the big sur to San Fran. Stay in San Fran.
Dec 8th - 11th - Stay in San Fran
11th Fly out of San fran

Is this a bit rushed - i.e the 8 hour (at least) drive from LA to GC. I could swap a san fran night for an extra night to break that journey up but is it worth taking my time along that route or should I get it over and done with?

thanks

I think it's ok. Not ideal, but not terrible.

One suggestion:
Push for the coast on the 6 Dec. It's a long drive to do, but will save you for the coast drive the next day, which will be longer than you think.

I have to disagree with bjookaj on this one - the plan is terrible. Way too rushed.

A couple of specifics:

In December muscle beach will be real quiet, maybe no one there, so don't get your hopes up on that one.

Driving from "somewhere around Bakersfield" to the coast and then up to San Francisco in one day is going to be a marathon driving day with very little time to see anything save the scenery whizzing by the windshield.

Go for it if you must, but I'd cut some destinations out and shorten the route based on your interests (which you don't state, so can't advise).

Fly from Vegas to SF and use one of your saved days to take a RELAXED, enjoyable day-trip up or down the coast. Wasting two days to do a brief drive-by of DV is pointless.

Too rushed, I would cut out GC and Vegas this trip and just take your time driving up Hwy 1 spending 3 nights.

Ah sugar,
thanks for all your responses.
Thought it looked a but much once I wrote it all down!
Unfortunately We really kinda wanna tick all those places - Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, drive through Death Valley, drive up the Big Sur. The only thing I think I may do instead is drive from LA to Vegas an stay 3 nights there and do a day trip to GC.
Thanks again for your help.

Go to Venice Beach on Sunday. There are people there year round on weekends unless weather is horrible. The sights of Hollywood can been seen any day of the week.

LA to the Grand Canyon is 8 1/2 hours with no stops for gas, bathroom and food. Figure at least 10 hours. And winter weather conditions are always great for appreciating GC.

As others have said, there is way too much driving and not much seeing. I would at least consider flying from Vegas to San Francisco and then driving to Monterey/Santa Cruz as a day trip.

Hope you have hotel reservations in these places as your trip is a few weeks out.

Yes we have 2 nights LA, 2 nights Vegas and 3 nights San Fran sorted. Just wondering weather to do the night in GC or +1 to Vegas.
Thanks for the Venice Beach advice. Will defo do that.

Vegas gets old quick. Borrow a day from there so you can stay at GC long enough to get out of the dumb car. (Overnight, plus a full day.)

really, I am going to sound like a moron here....
Its just a massive canyon. Stand at the top, be amazed, look around some more, then what!

None of the activities at http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/things2do.htm appeal? Well then, you're probably right. Since you apparently see a road trip as nothing more than an opportunity to 'tic off' a pre-compiled trophy list, 5 minutes will be more than enough! Take a few potshot photos to prove you were there, then bust out the Big Red Pen and paint a fat red X through the appropriate box. Hop back in the car, crank the music, and hurry off to your next Great Conquest. I'd suggest adding Antelope Canyon, Bryce, Zion, and Snow Canyon to the list as well. At your pace, you could easily 'hit' those in a day.

Ouch! scathing comeback there. Fair point though.
Thanks for your replies. I appreciate the feedback. I have learned to adjust the route to make it less of a rush and to visit the south rim not the west rim of GC. And to visit venice beach on the sunday we're there.
