I have a few links that might assist you. You need to be more specific about bringing a car into Ethiopia though for me to know how to help. There are high import duties applied to vehicles that you should be aware of. If for some resaon you decide to sell the car while here you will need certification of payment of said duties or an exemption if you sell it without taxes paid.

Take note that The "Carnet de Passages en Douane" (CPD) is the international customs document, which covers the temporary admission of motor vehicles. The CPD is still required today, in numerous countries around the world, for temporary admission of private automobiles, commercial vehicles or other categories of motor vehicles. It facilitates the temporary importation of motor vehicles by providing security for the payment of any customs duties and import taxes chargeable, should the vehicle not be re-exported.

Thanks, sorry I left out some details. I will likely not be in the country longer than 6 months at a time. Ethiopia doesnt require a carnet from what I have read so I would rather not buy it. I think there is a temporary permit which you buy at the border but I cant find any details about it. The vehicle would not be sold in Ethiopia.

Check with your local Automobile Assocoiation or FIA. Here is a list for Africa and elsewhere. I hear that the South African AA is the most efficient and up to date on African road travel, Carnets and regulations.
