Mexico City to MeridaHello,
A friend and I are going to Mexico near the end of our trip (late december) and have 10 days from landing in Mexico City to get to Merida to meet some family. We have looked into the country and understand 10 days is nearly nothing, but we don't have much of a choice and are finding it hard to decide on places to go, even after reading some other forums. We have looked into many areas on the pacific and gulf side of Mexico including:
The Arch Cabo and lovers beach
Chichen Itza (ruins and cave lake) - most likely a must do for us
Cliff divers Acapulco
Teotihuacan, Mexico City (Sun and moon temple)
Monarch butterflies, Michoacan
Jungle maya tour exploring underground rivers
Marietas islands, Puerto Vallarta and the hidden beach
We probably want to spend 2 or 3 days in Mexico City. Any advice would be helpful on where the best places to go for two teenagers that are interested in cultural and adventurous experiences and also where a good place to spend Christmas would be

1Looking at your list sounds to me like you have 2 main groups of things to do, which you need to decide between. i.e. Do a loop out of Mexico city to one of the places suggested on the pacific coast, then fly direct to Merida or,
Fly to Cancun after Mexico city and do the slow trip to Merida incorporating places like PDC, Tulum, Coba, Valledolid, Chichen on the way.

2Good suggestions. But unless you are into touristy beach towns, I would skip Playa del Carmen. To save time and still see good sites, you might want to consider going from Cancun to Valladolid, with a stop at the nearby Ek Balam ruins site and then on to Merida. Many worthwhile ruins sites in the Merida area.

3#s 1 & 2: The OP already has a set itinerary: They only have 10-days during which they plan 2-3 days in Mexico City followed by a trip to Merida to visit family.
So, with that basic itinerary, I'd recommend at least three days in Mexico City if not four including your day-trip to Teotihuacan. Then fly or bus it to Merida and stay there visiting family and surrounding areas (including Mayan ruins). You will see and experience some of the best of Mexico by doing just that.
Forget all the Acapulco, Matzatlan, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Michoacan stuff - you don't have time for all, or any, of that and those places are far off your pre-determined route. Remember, you'll need the better part of a day just to travel to those destinations and another to return.
