Scuba Dive and Hike Options in Egypt

I'm planning a trip towards the end of December, for 10 days. I plan on flying into Cairo, hang out there for a couple days, then I think head to Dahab for some scuba diving. I don't want to scuba dive the whole rest of my trip though, and was hoping to take in some natural wonders while I'm in the area, without having to spend too much time in transit during my short trip. Maybe a hike or adventure activity with beautiful scenery. Any suggestions?

Also, I'm not set on Dahab for scuba diving. I just heard it was good and not as touristy as Sharm el Sheik. So I'm open to other scuba diving recommendations as well.

Finally, I hear that December/January may not be ideal, as there's more of a likelihood of rain during that time of year, stirring up sediment, etc. Can anyone back that up, or is that assessment overblown?

Thanks much for any input! I'd value even the smallest bit of insight.

Oh, and if anyone has suggestions for cheap hostels/lodging in Cairo and/or Dahab, that would be much appreciated as well :)

Sharm El Sheik is more of a resorty type place. So it's good if you have lots to spend on hotels. It's also more an Arab and Russian tourist who does there. Dahab is more a European/Western tourist. Dahab is better in my opinion. But don't expect it to be un-touristy. Like Sharm El Sheik, it only exists for tourists.

You can hike up Mt Sinai while there. But check safety warnings at the time.
