Is it safe to travel to mexico right now?

So I have been planning to whole trip with all these stops and my girlfriend asked a important question last night.....is it safe for americans to travel to mexico right now.

With all that is going on in the past year with drug wars, kidnappings, etc I suppose it's a important question.

I figured that was all up in the border towns but is it safe for a couple to head down to Punta Allen, Tulum, Merida, etc?

LW was doing so well for awhile but I guess he just can't help himself. I just consider the source.

Actually did a lot of research on google and bing and come to the conclusion some say it's safe as ever.....others and goverment say there is s tourist warning and to be careful because it's dangerous. LP says one thing, writers say another, Fodors says another.

Was looking for real work opinions rather than articles and books feedback which mostly seems to say STAY AWAY!

All that said, #2 has a point... this guy has been posting prolifically asking all the basic questions: where should he go in Mexico, what guide book should he use, etc. It seems pretty insulting to all the people who spent time answering those pedestrian questions to suggest that maybe they'd be holding back on some big safety secret. He said he doesn't want to "rely completely on forum suggestions" in another post, and that he would rather, quote, "do a little research." Touche.

Obviously, the answer is that the "others" who say there is a "tourist warning" are full of sh*t, and that your girlfriend did not actually ask an "important" question, but simply an uninformed one. Mexico is ridiculously safe for tourists not involved in the drug trade, and anyone who suggests differently has profound issues with math.

Just returned in September from yet another trip to the Yucatan. All seemed well and I always come back alive. that is three trips a year since 1990. Use common sense and you should do fine. Photos see my website wolfcalls.com. I dont visit border areas at all..

OP, doing a google search of the entire Internet is not going to give you results tailored to your needs, ie., from experienced travelers and people who live in Mexico. Presumably, that is why you came to this forum. What others here are trying to tell you is before asking such a basic question on this particular forum, please use the advanced search feature. type in "safety" or "crime," etc. and select the Americas-Mexico forum. You will see dozens of discussions on this topic. If you want to balance the advice on this forum with the perspectives of different types of travelers, you can also search other travel forums like Fodors or TripAdvisor. But please take advantage of the long history of posts on this topic. Most people here try to be polite, but they are simply tired of typing responses they have typed many times before. And as should be expected, the people here have different opinions. No one can give you the definitive answer. You will still need to decide for yourself. Me, I'm a worry wort and I over prepare for every contingency, including safety and crime issues. But I love Mexico. I hope you go and enjoy your trip!

But what do the people who have actually BEEN there say, OP(#7)?

You have a lot of reading ahead of you. Let us know if there's any question that hasn't been covered in the link, at least a hundred times.

Wait! You say you've been here before, #14, and you've read "the same thing over and over," and are STILL asking if it safe to travel to Mexico?

Masterson was right. You're a troll!

#16, same answer applies. If a question bothers you, let it go. If no one answers, they get the message. Look at all the typing here to chastise a person for asking a question you have all seen before, but poster has not. Easier to have the standard answer on hard disc and paste it in, including the reminder of the search function.

siemprepatty gave excellent advise. I have used this method for years here in Veracruz and never had problems.

That was a naked woman from Calgary in an elevator in Mazatlan, siemprepatty. Scared a year's worth of tourism away from the Zona Dorada.

I don't see any recent news. Maybe they're covering this up, to coin a phrase?

Yes, Ryon - I did a google search and there is nothing since March (except a nothing story about her recovery in a local rag). Very odd story/stories from those that were there....

#19, if you mean me, I did not get hot and bothered. Those whining about the OP were the ones who got hot and bothered. I stand pat. This is a common issue on many travel boards. If someone asks a boring, repeat question, let it go, and if no one answers, fine.
