Indonesia 1 Month Trip ReportTrip Report
We were a couple traveling for one month for the first time in Indonesia. We are pretty green travelers so it was a learning experience for sure.
SLC to SIN on Delta – 1200 per/2 Stops
Arrived SIN at 1:00 am slept at airport on ground. Advice pick up bag don’t go through customs. There are sleeper lounges within the terminals. Morning flight to Medan. Arranged shuttle through Sam’s Bungalows Bukit Lawang (400.000 per). Good to arrange for first time can be hectic. Using money changer at airport not too bad. They’ll take everything and give you a fair price for no hassles. We were driven to a bank where they were selective of bills and condition. Sam’s Bungalows is well recommended. Quite at the end, against the river, monkey’s on your balcony, nice rooms. 3 nights Bukkit Lawang. Jungle trek with Thomas arranged through Sam’s. Great guide, informative, funny, good English. He run’s Thomas Jungle Tours which can be found on Trip Advisor. The bugs were not as bad as we thought. We were inoculated for Hep A, Tetnus, and Typhoid. Had no malaria pills but everyone swears there is no malaria there which should be taken with a grain of salt. After Bukkit Lawang we flew out of Medan airport. Very confusing to find a cheap ticket at the counter. Luckily we were helped by a travel agent. MED to JKT to SEM. Semarang we took a taxi (300.000) to Jepara. It was night so we had no other choice. Stayed at Jepara Indah. Kind of dive but good for the night. Jepara we took the Express ferry to Karimunjawa for (130.000 per). Beats the ferry for time and comfort. If going to Karimunjawa book a round trip or book as soon as possible so you don’t get stuck like we did taking the long 6 hour ferry back. Unpleasant experience can be avoided. We stayed at Escape which was nice. If we had to do it again I would skip Karimunjawa to spend more time in Bali/Lombok. But swimming with the sharks and Nirwana beach is nice. We made our way to Joga by a shuttle arranged by our hotel in Karimunjawa. Pretty easy and relaxing transit. About (130.000) each 12 hours and one stop. Stayed at Whiz hotel in Joga for a night then switch to Rumah Mertua. Rumah Mertua was one of our favorite stays. Though out of the center (50.000 cab ride) the staff is exceptional. Arranged all our excursions (Prambanan, Borobudur, Kratun, Wayang). A bit expensive but worth it. We were shocked by the entry cost for foreigners to Prambanan and Borobudur (200.000 per). Next was a train from Joga to Surabaya to get to Malang. We were side tracked because the Surabaya to Malang was full so we were convinced to take a commuter to Pradong where we could catch a bemo to Malang. That was a mistake as we got ripped off and it was a frustrating experience. We should have waited for the next available train and saved ourselves the hassle. Stayed at Hotel Helios. What a dump but good location. Booked our excursion to Bromo through the guys connect to the hotel expensive again at about 600.000 per if only 2 people which unfortunately we were. Be prepared for the cold cold morning. You can be waiting for an hour at the top and its windy. But it heats up fast. From Malang we took an overnight bus to Denpasar. Worth it but make sure you have all your important valuables with you at all times. We got ripped off and think it was when we had to exit the bus for the ferry to Bali. 60.000 per ticket all the way. From Denpasar we took a taxi to Ubud for 100.000. Good to haggle these guys to what you are willing to pay. Stayed at Dua Bharata for 350.000 a night. Rent a motorbike for sure to get around. Traffic is not as crazy as everywhere else and it will get you up and down the streets saving you the sweat. Visit the monkey forest and shopped for souvenirs. We were off to Padang Bai and decided to go to Gili Trawangan. Do not book ferries and buses with advertised prices. Haggle until they won’t go lower and then walk away. Chances are if you are reasonable they will agree. Let someone else pay the mark up. Fast boat to Gili T 200.000 per when they advertise it for 450.000. Stayed at Ozzie’s which was ok. Will recommend No Name Homestay which had cool people running it. Really recommend the El Pirata Pizza up the street from No Name. Some of the best pizza I’ve had. Make sure to stop by Vintage Delivery which is off the main strip. We then took ferry to Gili Air. You will have to wait until it fills up but it is really cheap. We would recommend the Gilli’s. T if your into partying. Air if you’re into relaxing and diving. Diving prices are the same and go to same places on both islands. Stayed at Kukalu and scuba dove next door at Blue Marlin. Most of the restaurants suck on Gili Air. Scallywags was the only worthwhile experience. Diving is real cheap at 350.000 per tank dive. Again took the fill up and go ferry to Lombok. We haggled with a guy at the pier and he arranged a ride to Kuta Lombok. I think it was 100.000 for about a half hour drive. We ended up staying at Tastura which was a decent place. Best bang for our buck. Rent a motorbike again. We surfed in Gerupuk and it was good having no experience. You can haggle down the price of a lesson. Jawa II is also a cheap eat with decent food. Seger Beach was awesome. Great to climb the hill and view all the surfers from above. From Kuta Lombok we flew to Denpasar for a night. From there we flew to SIN for our final few days.
Note: Being October we had no problems finding places to stay, nothing was crowded, and the weather was perfect. Rain in the rainforest at night, can't recall any bad weather really. You should bring your own liquor. Beer is not that cheap and it will add up. You can bring up to a liter but you have to carry it. The trip was a lot of traveling which drove costs up a bit. We had time to relax but sometimes we were haggered by the travel. Plan on a lot of people not speaking any English.
