I just wanted to know if people thought it was possibly if I am arriving at 4.10pm to get the train to Laos the same night?
I gather maybe the best option is to get to Don Muang train station, it goes from there at I think 8.50pm?
Would the best option be a taxi? Would that cost much? I think an overnight bus may go from the airport but the thought of all night on a bus fills me with dread. I prefer the thought of the train unless others can advise me better!

Taxi should cost not more than 300 baht to Don Muang, there are also buses from Suvarnabumi.

2What time does your train depart?
What is the big rush?
If the train has a departure soon after you fly in maybe better to use a taxi! If you are only flying into Bangkok from another city in Thailand you could use an earlier flight. If you haven't visited Bangkok yet - spend the night in the city and then use go to Laos.

5Thanks guys for the reply!!
Sounds like its probably possible as long as the flight is ontime. The big rush is that I only have 7 days from landing in Bangkok to leaving again and seeing I've been there 3 times before I was hoping to do a hair-brained dash to Laos. But that is so tight then if I dont make the first night overnight train it may not be worth it all.
And in the answer to the bus question , I hate overnight trips. You cant sleep, you cant walk around, its just an endless feeling, I nearly went mad last time! A train is much more civilized. Hopefully.

8I believe that there have been recent timetable changes and that was why I was being cautious as I am based in the UK. However you can use the thai railway site
The nice man in seat 61 shows train number 133 leaving Don Muang at 21.31 which is the same train I was looking at

9Oh yeah there is too. Thanks. Maybe the 133 is a new train, the nice man only mentioned the 69 and 77. Though I just clicked on the fares and it doesnt bring anything up whereas it does for the other two. Maybe its an upcoming service rather than a current one?
Anyway maybe I will book the 8.50 with 9.31 as a possible backup plan. Cheers!
As an aside does anyone think that this is a viable plan or too rushed?
Day 1 overnight bangkok - Vientiene
Day 2 Vientiene
Day 3 Vientiene - Vang Vieng
Day 4 VV
Day 5 VV - Luang Prabang
Day 6 LP
Day 7 LP- Bangkok
Day 8 Fly out of Bangkok
I know this is off topic and in the. wrong section, but just if anyone has any suggestions/ideas. I was going to fly back from Luang Prabang if possible. it seems quite expensive but would save time.
