Overland Europe - Iran - 2012 fall

Following the old "hippie trail" from London, UK to Calcutta, India, (with Turkey, Iran and Pakistan in between) we are planning to travel overland by train, hitchhiking and walking. Three participants are already signed up, one starting from Cork, Ireland, the other two joining in Budapest, Hungary. We plan to utilize all the inventions of modern travel: couchsurfing, wwoofing and carpooling along the way. The journey will take as long as it takes, no fixed itineraries planned or promises made. We plan to spend more time in Turkey and Iran, where we already have friends waiting to help and show us around. Shared expenses, no participation or extra fees, only real travelers allowed on board. If you are interested, please write a comment with your contact details or email us at info@real-expeditions.com.

You have planned for getting your Iran visas have you? And in which way...directly at an embassy or through an agency... They are expensive and depending on the nationality, not so easy to get. But maybe you know all that already.

Jennifer J is right, best to sort your Iran visa out in advance. Unfortunately this means you must enter within a 3 month window of the visa-receipt date. Visas on Arrival are given out for about fifty euros, but for plane arrivals only, and I think (but am not sure) that the UK is not a VOA country! (If you are British). Many European countries are though.

We got our visas at the Iranian embassy in Budapest. It took one week and cost around 70EUR per person. Very kind staff, one application form, one photo needed only, when we picked them up they offered us tea... 10/10!

Good news. Sounds like typical Iranian hospitality.
