The Guangzhou-Hong Kong direct trains do sometimes sell out, so buying in advance certainly wouldn't be a bad thing. But there's always the fall-back option of taking a train to Shenzhen and walking across the border. I don't think these trains ever sell out, but I've had to queue for well over an hour before just to buy tickets.Lot's of people here warn about the Lo Wu/Luo Hu border crossing: I've been here at very busy times before, and always found that the queues for foreigners were very reasonable. If you're Chinese, then crossing here can be a bit of a mess, but there are just never that many foreigners around for the lines to get too clogged up: at least this is my experience. It's certainly more pleasant and much less crowded if you can get on the direct train, but if you have to walk through the border crossing, it's certainly not the end of the world.
