Hi all --
I appreciate all the advice I've received so far about planning a few days before the Antarctica boat. Anybody have some recommendations on must do's in Ushuaia? I'll have three days there.
Many thanks,
D

There's a good tourist information office in Ushuaia. Go there. Most people seem to spend their time shopping like mad (you'll see) and drinking themselves insensible. Preferable (IMHO) is hiking in the park, which ranges from quite nice to totally spectacular--you'll be spending enough time with nothing in particular to do once you're on your boat, so get out and stretch your legs while you've got the chance. There are also some museums.
Hope that's helpful.

Also worth would be a trip to walk with the penguins. Visit Pira Tours who are located near the tourist office and also have another office on San Martin. It is a great way to spend half a day. Just remember this is the only agency that has permission to allow you to walk with the penguins. But don't leave this for last minute as you don't always get same day tours.4
Do a not so hard trek to Glacial Martial, with excellent views of Ushuaia, Beagle channel and Navarino island.Go to the museum in the old prison, don´t miss it. Lots of information about Antarctica exploration.

There are a lot of good dayhikes around Ushuaia. A walk along the coast is really nice. You can do it in the Natrional Park or just east to estancia Tunel and Rio Encajonado or west from Barrio Cauquen along the Monte Susana till bahia Ensenada in the park. You avoid the entrance fee that way too. Apart from the small hike to the glaciar Martial just above the town, you can also go to Cerro del Medio or to Laguna de los Tempanos in the valley of Andoora very close to the city. Other good dayhikes are Laguna Esmeralda and beaver watching along Rio Carabajal in the evening. Also some good options for horseriding, kayaking and 4 x 4 excursions. Some interesting museums and history as the old prision and the Maritime museo. In this case, a visit to estancia Harberton is an option too. The usual trip along the beagle channel won´t be that interesting if y'u go to Antarticalater, the same as the trip to the penguin island. The small train in the National park ir overpriced and a tourist trap
