Moving to Gabon soon and looking for some tipsHello everyone,
I'm moving to Gabon soon, so I'm wondering what to expect.
Are there severe electricity shortages? What about internet? Will I be able to get a decent internet for a fair price? Do they have high speed internet in the first place?
What about costs of living? I read on this site that it costs $100 a day to live in Libreville.
So I should be expecting a monthly salary above $3000, right?
Is real estate expensive there? Is it affordable to rent a small apartment/studio?

11 bedroom apartments that are considered to be in good condition, appropriate for expatriates who are living long term (1 to 3 years) in Libreville start at around 400,000 XAF per month and go up to 800,000 XAF, certainly in the Centre Ville and Tahiti, Quartier Aeroport and Sabliere which are all the most demanded areas for expatriates living there.
There is also a 15% Rent Tax that tenants need to pay.
128 KBS internet will cost approximately 15,000 XAF per month
256 KBS internet will cost approximately 20,000 XAF per month
512 KBS internet will cost approximately 29,500 XAF per month
1MB internet will cost approximately 45,000 XAF per month
How much it costs to live per day is a pretty wide question. Libreville is notoriously expensive, one of the costliest capital cities in Africa, certainly when you are looking at the price of expatriate living patterns. You want to eat like you do at home, then it will cost much more.

2Totally agree with am021169. I lived and worked there last year.
Terribly expensive if you want to do the typical expat thing. However there is much to do, nightlife is very good and there are good restaurants. Plenty of places to visit. It is actually one of my favourite destinations along with Senegal but both are expensive.
It is set up quite well and the country is quite lucky really, apart from the fact there are something like 50 ministers in govt with a population of 1.5 million...work that out, there is quite a big divide in the haves and have nots, be prepared to be quiet about the countries rulers, a little like Thailand and it's King.

3Gabon is expensive yes, but not that much as people say it is. compared to other countries it is expensive. with about $1000 you can get a really good apartment and with $30 you can have a great meal a day when you take the expensive restaurants. its even more cheaper when you try to fix your own food at home. if you need more tips or any help you can sent me a mail
