Looking for a chilled out January holidayHi Everyone,
I am currently volunteering in Rajasthan and my boyfriend is coming to visit in January for three weeks. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has any ideas for somewhere that is not too touristy where we could chill out, go walking and enjoy nice weather.
I was initially thinking of Rishikesh but that’s out because of the weather in January. I have been doing some research and looking at Varkala and in particular at staying at Kaiya House as the reviews seem to be good. Does anyone have any experience of staying there? Was also looking at Goa but thinking that may be overcrowded that time of year? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. We are just looking for somewhere chilled out that’s not too over crowded that we can go walking and relax? Does not need to be a beach, that's just what I have found so far.

1The big crowds have left Goa by then. Always will be visitors, but January is a nice time to go.

5" does not need to be a beach" You could go to Madhya pradesh...visit Mandu where you can do some nice walks and go further toPachmarhi a hill resort which will be cold at nights but warm sunny days and walking is great there. Maheshwar is also a nice riverside town...easy to plan a 3 week trip..its al well away from the tourist / backpacker trail...if thats what you want. Goa? ...seen better days imo and much has been spoilt. Maybe in January the masses would have left but their rubbish will still be there... Mr. Pirate knows some quieter places though it seems....I went back to Goa a few yeaes ago after a 20+ year absence and was horrified...some places were unrecognizable, insensitive , scruffy, develoment, so much uncleared rubbish and dirty beaches etc....beach shack city on some beaches...so if you go, research it well

7Compared to Western standards,Goa is a cesspool of filth and garbage.Lets get it out there. Most hotels along the coast, including the 5 star joints, empty their raw sewage straight into the sea...Piss in your toliet in the AM and swim with your urine in the PM..Cows and water buffalo enjoy the beach, defecating where they please...Hoards of Indian tourists come to the beach, and for the most part, dump all of their plastic, paper plates, beer bottles,as they please. There are no trash cans....But by India standards,Goa is great!

8If it has to be a beach then I would get a cheap flight to Thailand.

#10 - while the weather may be clear, in January, it's going to be freezing in Manali. The OP want's somewhere to chill-out, not be chilled.

12Hampi is pretty chill. It does have a lot of tourists right by the river, but you can find some more quiet places further out. There's a lot of fun stuff to do.... a nice lake you can swim in, great bouldering, and it's fun to rent a bike and ride through the farms. You do get some of the 'new agey' overnight yogi types and it can be a bit of burnout central, but you will also meet a lot of interesting people.
