I am looking for a room in Rio de Janeiro

Hi all my fellow travelers,

I am so lucky that I am going to study and live in Rio de Janeiro from late December to mid July.

My question is then if any of you guys know websites or what the best way how to find a place is? I would love to stay with locals to "learn" or improve my Portuguese. The University I am about to do my courses at is located in Gávea close to Leblon and Ipanema. In addition do anybody know how much a room approximately will cost close to the areas mentioned above?

Thanks in advance

All the best

Leblon and Ipanema are the most expensive square meter in South America and one of the most expensive in the world.

To give you an ideia, from today´s newspaper, the average rental price of an one-bedroom apartment in Leblon is costing R$ 3580 and R$ 3150 in Ipanema.

Thanks for your reply. I was aware of it was expensive but not that expensive :)

Do you know where most students live?

Botafogo is a safe middle-upper class area that pretty convenient for getting to Ipanema on the metro. Not cheap but cheaper than Ipanema.

With their parents and not just students most young people do. If I were you I'd contact the university and see whether they can help in terms of finding shared accomodation, homestays etc.

Your problem is that pretty much anywhere in Zona Sul is going to be expensive and even more so if you are a short term rental. As the period in question falls across both reveillon and carnaval, most people are going to seek the most from the price. Gávea and Leblon are particularly expensive. If you want somewhere considerably cheaper you will probably end up looking further afield and commuting each day. Try looking at O Globo for the online real estate ads for pricing of areas. If you are on a tight budget you want to look for a kitchenette not a one bedroom apartment.

I have been studying at PUC since July. The CCCI office will arrange housing for you for 1000rs a month. The homestays can sometimes be a good deal if you want to live in Ipanema or Leblon and don't want to share a room. I wanted to be immersed too, but the quality of the arrangements is really a lottery system. Some people were placed in family homes, many of the hosts are older single women and for many hosts it is purely a monetary transaction. I moved out of my homestay so save money and I now live with a wonderful brazilian family in Botafogo for 710rs. I found them through this website http://www.easyquarto.com.br/

Good luck in your search!

Silbley: thanks a lot I really appreciate that. Do you think it would be easy to find a room when I get to Brazil? Because I think it's a bit difficult now when I am in Denmark :)

Sierrah: I am actually going to study at PUC from December and have heard both positives and negatives thinks about the home stays, however I would like to find something myself. As mentioned above I would like to stay with locals but maybe I need to realistic and just say yes to what I can get?

Thanks in advance

All the best

You are coming in the peak of the season. This make things more difficult but not impossible. I've tried to sent you a pm explaining the best I can do by now, but was not successful. Send me a pm with your email and I'll give you more details. Start learning basic Portuguese at once. It will make a big difference.

Thank you very much Radu007. I will take a look at the mentioned website.

Silbley: thats kind of you, I have sent you a private message. I don't think I will be able to learn basic portuguese before I get there, I am a little to busy with my studies at home unfortunately.
