Morocco itinerary?

Dear All,

my husband and I will be travelling to Morocco for 12 days in February/March. We are planning to make this holiday a road trip around the country - starting point will be Marrakech, where we will be taking a flight to. We are not sure about some points on the list, and not sure if we are trying to squeeze too much in (though this will be a self-drive thing, so we can probably see more than by taking public transport or tours with other people).

Any thoughts are much appreciated...

.: arrive in Marrakech early in the morning, spend 2 nights in Marrakech
.: (drive to Essaouira? - 1 night ... or skip this?)
.: Rabat - 1 night
.: Meknes - 1 night
.: Fés - 1 night
.: Merzouga for 2 nights including camel trekking for a day!? OR should we skip Merzouga because it it too touristy and head to Zagora/M´Hamid instead?
.: Todra and Dadès Gorges - 1 night
.: drive back to Marrakech via Ouarazate and Ait Benhaddou, maybe including an overnight stop.
.: two more nights in Marrakech, relax and say good-bye.

So mainly this is coming down to two questions:
Desert experience in Merzouga OR M´Hamid?
Are two nights in either of the places enough, or should we add an extra night? I feel strongly that we should do either/or, and not both, as to not have a rushed experience. However, I want to be safe and sound (I have no idea if the area has been safe recently).
Should we add another night somewhere near the route, or is there anything nearby that we would spend more time at? How about Toubkal National Park or the High Atlas?

Thank you!

With 12 days you will have great flexibility to stop when/where/however long you wish when you drive yourselves. I'd delete Meknes, add a night in Fes, and maybe skip Merzouga because it likely will be a bit cold. Add nights in Essaouira (also might be a bit cool) and Ait-Benhaddou. But stay flexible.

No, in February/March it is not so cold in the desert, a little at night but it is not so bad. I was there that time and it was OK and normally I am frozen LOL.
About to choose which desert, you have 12 days for your holiday so you have not so much time to travel. Travel is going slowly and distances are big.
You want to go to Marrakech and Fes so the best is to go to Erg Chebbi anyway, you have that on the way. And I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed. It is a big area and anyway now last years are there not so much tourists.

marocfan, it is clear, you are so frozen so you need to go to the desert in July - Augusti when it is around 40-50 degree LOL

True! But at night it can be cold even then.
