Travel & Diving Gilis, Komodo and Flores in DEC/JAN

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to start an around the world trip in late 2013 and expect to be in Indonesia by the end of December. The plan is to start in Bali and travel to the eastern part of Flores, via Lombok, Sumbawa and Komodo. I was sad to discover that this seems to be the rainy season and travel in Nusa Tenggara is said to be difficult this time of year. Can you tell me about your experiences?

Also: I'm a huge diving-addict and diving around the Gilis, Komodo and Rinca islands is on top of my to-do-list for my trip. How is diving there this time of the year? Is it advisable? I have been diving in the Gulf of Thailand during the wet season and it wasn't all bad...

Best regards from Germany,
Daniel

The travel on Flores can be pretty difficult. The roads are in better shape this year after a lot of construction, but not great.

I'm really sorry to say that almost all dive shops in Komodo close in January. Diving is still possible in the Southern part of the park, but it's quite hard to get there, and not on day trips. So the only shops that are open will run daytrips if the weather is good. Last year in January was not so good, February was okay, but early March was pretty rough. Pretty rough in Komodo is a whoel different magnitude of "rough" than the Gulf of Thailand. Instead of being disappointed with the conditions - it might be better to give Komodo diving a miss at that time :(

Hello,
We are diving in Bali and this is what I can say.
-Most people has told me that the gilis are not worth diving; damaged coral and small fish.
-We have dived in Padang bai which was nice and gili Tepenkong and Mepang; small islets in front of candidassa were we saw turtles, sharks and 2 mola-mola. Strong currents though
-Also have dived in Jemeluk (best corals so far) and Tulamben; and amaizing dive site (we have dived the wreck twice during the day and one night dive) Better stay in Tulamben and you will avoid day trips which fill up the wreck. We have used dive concepts; 1.300.000 idr for 7 dives equipment included, this is best deal you will find
-I have been told Komodo is very nice but we will not go there
-Next week we will do 10 dives in menjagan area with dive concepts again
-It has not rained one day since we came to bali ( almost 20 days ago)

Regards
Javier

I was in Flores in March this year.

I travelled in a Perama boat from Labuan Bajo to Lombok. Seas were rough, the wooden superstructure of the boat was damaged and I was sea sick. See: www.peramatour.com

I am also in Bali at present. It rained for one night in the last two weeks.

Komodo in November is much better. That last years have been a bit unusual weather...normally march is dry, but last year was rough and most ferries we shut down. The year before - great time to come.

January is almost always the rains and something to be aware of.
