14ish Day Ethiopia itinerary

My wife and I are flying into ADD on January 1st, and flying out on the 15th. We are putting together our rough itinerary and are wondering if anyone has any thoughts. Thoughts on accommodation (looking around $10-20 for a couple bed while outside of ADD, for example) are also appreciated.

1st-3rd: Addis Ababa (side point, our eventual destination is Joburg, where we will be living for a year. Do you know of a guest house that will let us leave a bag or two while we move around the rest of the country?)

4th: Stay at a town between ADD and Bahir Dar

5th-8th: Bahir Dar & Gonder (LP says Gonder is nice for Leddet/Christmas?)

9th: Fly to Lalibela

9th & 10th: Lalibela

11-13th or 14th: Mesket escarpment hiking w/ TESFA Tours

Night of the 14th: stay in Lalibela,
morning of the 15th: Fly to ADD
morning of the 16th: Fly out.

This is still a very rough plan, but would appreciate, and be grateful for, any feedback.

Thanks!

Peter

I think you would be spending too much of your limited time in Addis.

Getting all the way to Bahir Dar in one day is not difficult. The hard part is waking up early enough to catch a good bus (Sky Bus or Selam).

Thanks, Voyager. Would you recommend adding another destination, then, or just increasing time at the existing stops?

Up to you, but personally I would want to spend perhaps three days in the Simien Mountains.

I have never done a TESFA trek but have longed to do so, however a recent post on this forum reports a very disappointing experience with them.

GT Guest house in addis is fantastic. They have gorgeous rooms with big ensuite. Safe, secure, place to store your luggage. The girl that runs it speaks perfect English and studied in Boston so has a good command of the language, they have airport pickup as well. Full kitchen for your use too, large living room, tv, etc. if you are lucky you get the whole floor to yourself, like having your own home in addis! Highly highly recommend it. They have a website, and she is good at emailing you back.
