Northern Argentina

I am starting my trip through South America in Buenos Aires. It is my plan to visit Iguazu Falls before heading to Salta and then onto Bolivia.

I am not in a rush and so rather than just linking these areas with long bus rides, was wondering if there are any sites which can be recommended in Northern Argentina? Are there any spots on that route which are worth exploing and spending a few days?

San Ignacio ruins one hour east of Posadas, get off the bus from Iguazu, spend the morning or afternoon there, then get a local bus to Posadas for evening. I like Posadas and Corrientes as nice friendly cities with pleasant river front. You could visit the semi-tropical forests of eastern Salta and Juyjuy provinces (little-known) but you may want to leave this for Las Yungas of Bolivia.

Esteros del Ibera is a good place to break the journey from Iguazu to Salta. From Mercedes (Corrientes province) take a bus to Colonia Pellegrini. There are lots of capybaras, caymans and other animals you can see at a really close range.

The canoe tours to see the wildlife leave C. Pellegrini mid afternoon and return just after dark. Plan to arrive at noon or before, to take one of the tours same day.

The area around Salta is well worth to explore for a week or more.

I second the area around Salta. There are some amazing natural places surrounding the city that can be seen by car rental or tour. You could also visit Cafayate and taste some Argentine wines.
