You can go to Can Gio on a ferry, but then you have to head back through the mangroves to Nha Be and then across to the Delta. Have a look at Google maps, Can Gio is just to the West of Vung Tau. You can then see where you need to go by road, there is also another ferry crossing Pha An Thoi Dong which will save you going back through Nha Be. The roads around those areas are not marked well, but hey thats all part of the adventure.3
Hi Simon - to answer your first question, yes there doesn't seem to be a problem taking bikes on the hydrofoil between VT & HCMC, though there maybe restrictions during the busy periods such as weekends / holidays. I think you have to pay a few dong for the bike but not much. Avoid Greenlines as they have a poor safety record. You could maybe enquire in VT about boats to other parts of the Delta.4
Thanks for this Skinny. Nice to know that the hydrofoil can be used.Roadking, just found Can Gio - its really in the middle of nowhere. Looks interesting heading from there, I'll have to see how good my map is.

Just for info: Got hydrofoil today and they charged me 200,000 for my bike!I rolled up to desk at about 11:30 and said can I take my bike?`The girl rang someone and then said not till 13:30, ie not the next couple of ferries. I asked how much,and she made another phone call and she said 200. I said too much, she rang again and thet obviously weren't budging so she said that is the priice. I tried walking away, but it made no difference..
Bike went insdide and was carried on by staff, but a bit expensive - half price is more common. Nonetheless, I had ridden to V T and then decided not to stay overnight so hydrofoil was`only real option and therefore I had to pay. It ain't going to break the bank so not overly concerned, but others may like to know.
I s'pose I should have asked for my bilke's complimentary towel and water seeing as it paid full fare!

Hi Simon,thanks for your post. I was told by a local here in Nha Trang that I couldn't take my bike on the ferry so glad to know I can (even if it is expensive). Are you blogging? I'd be interested in seeing your route as it sounds like I'm just a couple of weeks behind you.

I'm sure we never paid 200,000 2 years ago - it may depend which ferry company you use or on demand / time of day or week. Still in the big picture $10 is not a lot of money for a 1.5hr ferry ride - how much are bikes on the English Channel ferries for a 30min crossing? Good news is that ferries in the Mekong Delta are much cheaper. If you have the chance visit the Cu Chi tunnels NW of HCMC - worth every dong!!Was out today in La Janda (south Spain) and it reminded me of the Mekong after the rain we've had here recently. Slightly cooler and fewer people though.

Update on this: I think Simon broke the ice. I walked up to the ferry ticket office and they said I could bring the bike without having to call anyone but they didn't know how much it would cost but said I should pay on the ferry. When I got to the ferry, the captain asked me for 150,000, which I gave him, I got no receipt, and he and others carried my bike with panniers (very heavy) both on and off the ferry for me.
