Bariloche / El Chalten / El Calafate

Hi there,

We are figuring out our itinerary for our trip through Argentina.
Not sure how we should divide our time between Bariloche, El Chalten and El Calafate.

Say we would have 5 days (maybe 6) for two or three of these destinations.
What would you recommend us to do???

Thanks in advance for your help!

To connect Bariloche with El Calafate and El Chalten is difficult, or very expensive or very timeconsuming and a long journey. % days isn´t enough anyway for the 3 so you should just plan 5 or 6 days for El Calafate and El Chalten. Both are much more spectacular than Bariloche. In any case, with more time, include Ushuaia

El Calafate is a good base from which to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier (80 kms away). I stayed at EC for just a day.

However IMO and based on what others have said 1 day is all you need at El Calafate (just to see the PM Glacier only) and El Chalten has more to offer.

Its a 28 hour bus ride between Bariloche and El Calafate.

It depends on what YOU want to do! I would suggest what the above say, but if you aren't after hiking, then its probably not for you.

Your options are:
  • Bariloche and area for 5 days (plenty of time for this area).
  • El Calafate and El Chalten (like above).

chris1953, you stayed just a day at El Calafte.
Is that one day, one night or
one day, two nights?

Paul, there is nothing of note in El Calafate. Its a good jumping off point to get to El Chalten and Perito Moreno.

Hello trent84,

I understood El Calafate is nothing but only a good base to start from for a glacier-hike.
I guess we should stay at least two night for this, but I was just wondering.

I would stay a night (unless you need to stay longer).

Buses to El Chalten leave regularly. The last bus is 6-6:30pm.

So you can spend the day at the Glacier (do hiking) or whatever you choose and get back and scoot off to El Chalten.

#5: chris1953, you stayed just a day at El Calafte.
Is that one day, one night or one day, two nights?

The latter: we arrived in the late afternoon, had a meal and walked around the township. Day 2 early start to the PM Glacier then the afternoon free (little to do). Day 3 we left early for BA.

Depending on how much time you want to spend at the PMG you could leave for EC on Day 2 as per #8's advice.
