Implictions of not taking a connecting flight

Hi All

Found a decent-ish price to KL for Xmas (from London) - £750 with Vietnam Airlines via Hanoi.
Got me thinking that quite a good trip would be open jaw into Hanoi then travel by land to KL....
If I want to do this though the price jumps to £1,100!!!

What do you think would happen if I just left the airport once my flight landed in Hanoi and didn't take the connecting flight to KL? Reckon this could lead to difficulties?
I'm wondering if it could invalidate my return flight? (KL-Hanoi-London)

Any ideas?

Cheers!

Your luggage will probably be sent straight through to the final destination, assuming it's a connecting flight and not a stop over.

and airlines have the rights to invalidate your return ticket portions. I won't do that if i were you

Yes: your return ticket would no longer be valid.

You could, however, solve the checked baggage problem very easily.

They will probably cancel your return flight ticket if you do that.

Not "probably" #4, absolute certainty.

Little to add to the info already provided.

If I want to do this though the price jumps to £1,100!!!

What are your travel dates? Are you (a bit) flexible with them?
I think you should be able to find a less-expensive open-jaw ticket.

Thanks for all your replies - yes, looks far too risky,

I am flexible - but have only got about 3.5 weeks in total and want to go away for the max amount of time.

Looked at open-jaws, but more expensive at the moment.

Another weird thing is that London-Hanoi-London is 1/3 more expensive than London-Hanoi-KL-Hanoi-London!!

No #8, there is nothing weird about it.

Most people (especially those travelling on business) want direct flights. So people flying to KL are willing to pay more for the convenience of flying direct on MAS, so in order to compete Vietnam Airlines have to offer a low fare. However, people going to Hanoi would in any case choose the direct flights that they offer, so they can charge higher prices.

As #9 says, direct flights are almost always more expensive...sometimes twice the price (or even more) of indirect ones.

Many people will pay for the privilege of not having that 4 hour stopover at 3am in Qatar....;-)

Good point Voyager. Never thought of it like that!

Last year I converted my Emirates flight MUC-KUL-MUC (which I had initially booked) to open jaw (MUC-DXB + KUL-MUC). Emirates told me that my return flight would be invalidated if I didn't continue flying from DXB to KUL. In the end the converted ticket (with one flight less, the DXB-KUL one) was 100 Euro more expensive than the complete ticket. More profit for Emirates...
