It can be quite difficult to get a flight to Shannon from Atlanta, which is far closer to Kinsale than Dublin. I noticed that Delta offered a direct flight from Atlanta to Dublin, but when I researched it a bit, I found that if you went in early May and booked with Expedia, you could travel to Dublin for about 850$ a person with a stopover in Chicago and on to Dublin with Aer Lingus as opposed to around 1000$ direct with Delta. It might be best to stay in Dublin for a night before you decide to rent a car and get on the road. I agree with a previous poster to driving after a long flight is not a good idea.

Regarding your phone service. We have AT&T and were able to pay 5 dollars extra once off for a month on our family plan to get service in Ireland with O2, but the price of calls was still outrageous and data is a no-no. But it was comforting to have in case of an emergency. Verizon may have a similar option, but it might just be best to go to a Verizon store and inquire.

a new direct flight between ORD (Chicago) and SNN (Shannon)
but it will only be available June through August 2013
UNITED have a daily service between EWR (Newark) and SNN (Shannon)
year round.

Hello there,
My parents live in Co. Cork and i often travel there from England, i have visited Kinsale many times and its a nice little town (although a bit touristy). There are some very good pubs and restaurants though and i would recommend Jim Edwards highly.

If you're in Kinsale and want some places to go you really will need to hire a car, there are some nice towns around to visit Bandon, Clonakilty, Killarney. Also things to do like visiting Blarney Castle to kiss the famous blarney stone- thought to give you the gift of the gab. Mizen head is a cool place to go its the most south westerly point in ireland and super pretty on a good day. You can also take the N71 from Co. cork to Co. Kerry and drive up through the mountains past a famous view point called "ladies view" its a fantastic drive and VERY picturesque.

We've decided to travel the end of May. We'd love to simply fly out of Birmingham. Uh, Birmingham, Alabama. Learned the hard way, you need to be specific about that. Got some really amazing prices on airfare. Then I realized they were for Birmingham, England! :)

I've check several web-sites and airlines. Lots of info out there! Info that can be confusing. For example, apparently,
KLM and Delta share planes/flights. Your ticket is from KLM but the person sitting next to you bought their ticket from Delta.
Weird. Not a biggie, but weird.Just more 'stuff' to wade through.

I'm looking for suggestions to narrow our choices. Flying from B'ham will require a minimum of 2 stops, the last being JFK then on to Shannon. Driving to Atlanta would eliminate one stop, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I'd rather leave from home and more importantly, return home, skipping the ATL airport/traffic nightmare.

The fastest Total flight time is about 14 hours. From Shannon, we'll then have to get to Kinsale, which should take a couple of hours, I think. A long day, no matter how you look at it. But, I'll get to wake up in Ireland. A pretty sweet trade-off!

Does all this sound about right? Make sense? Any ideas, improvements, suggestions? Is it worth the extra air-time and $$ to fly to Cork? I'm getting itchy to book the flight - I'm afraid the price will go up or our 'preferred' flight times will be lost.
