package transport help wanted

Hi All, I'm in the Bay Area of California and am trying to get a small portable air compressor to our safari guide from last summer, who is based in Arusha. One day we had two flats out in the Serengeti; fortunately he had two spares. But with an air compressor and tire plug kit he could be self-sufficient out in the bush. He is a wonderful guide who works hard running his small mom-and-pop operation, and who knows his stuff and cares about his country and sustainable development. At the same time he recognizes that the postal service there (as well as government agencies generally) is pretty corrupt. Shipping via the usual DHL type services is crazy expensive, so I am hoping to find someone who is checking some of their luggage and would be willing to carry this item to Arusha for free or perhaps to cover any excess baggage fee. The item is in a plastic carrying case, weighs 9 pounds (4.1 kg), and is 12"x7"x9.5" (30cm x 18cm x 24cm). You would pack this with your checked luggage, meet him in Arusha, and then would have room for souvenirs on the way back!

That's a great idea for a thankyou gift!
I'm sorry I can't help you, but I'm sure you'll find someone who can.

Good luck, I had a similar problem getting a new tent out to my guide, waited a year and took it myself in the end!

It may be too late but it would probably be much simpler/cheaper overall to source it out there. It is pretty standard issue for safari vehicles so he should have no trouble getting something in Arusha. The problem with sourcing abroad is not just postage/courier costs but import duty. In many African countries the latter can be substantial and you may well find that if you post/courier it that he can't access your kind gift without traveling to Dar and paying a small fortune to get it released from customs.

There is also a possibility that anyone carrying it in for you could be challenged - unless they can persuade Customs it is for their personal use then duty is payable.

It's a really nice idea but having sent car spares/equipment (for personal use) both by post and in person when flying in I can tell you it isn't necessarily straightforward even though we had a car there and the paperwork to prove that.
