Keeping Photos Safe and Getting Them Home
I'm one of these awkward people who take photos in RAW mode (or max resolution/quality) so the image files are large. When travelling long term, for me photos will be very important (for the long term future). So what do people do about keeping them safe and getting copies home (or secure).
As I understand things, many internet cafes and internet access have upload limits (or speed restrictions) meaning uploading loads of large image files is impractical. Maybe copy to DVD and post (or a couple of copies), keeping the SD card until somebody confirms DVD received OK.
I'd probably be travelling with a laptop or tablet (travelling with, NOT carrying around). SD cards are small, light and cheap.
Initially intending to start in Central/South America, and SE Asia appeals (Vietnam, Cambodia, and region). Though no set plans as things will be "fluid", seeing a country, forming opinions from talking to others about where to next and moving on when ready, no hurrying. I appreciate different constraints in different countries.
So what do people do ? What assumptions above are wrong ?

We always carry an external hard drive on which we copy all the pictures while traveling. We keep the hard drive in a separate bag and never together with the laptop in case someone decides to steal the laptop. In addition, we have uploaded the best pictures online to keep them more "safe". We haven't had problems with limited data amounts (only in NZ we came across data limits), but in South America the connections are rather slow and uploading images online takes a while.5
I also carry a 2.5" hard drive with me. I have micro SD cards, but store everything on the hard drive. It's very compact, and affordable - my 2TB hard drive was US$200 (given the size is a bit much for most people, I also have movies, videos, documentaries, podcasts, audiobooks, stored on there, which I will transfer to my micro SD card and enjoy on my phone). I have seen a 2.5" 1.5TB hard drive for as low as US$120.
