Marau and Chapada Diamantina

I'm planning a trip to brazil for 12 days over new years, and i want to visit the Chapada Diamantina and then a couple of days at the beach, i found a hotel in Marau that i love. i was thingking 3 days chapada and 5 days beach.
my questions are: Does anybody know how to get from Salvador to Marau? is it worth loosing the 5hours for the trip or should we just stay around Salvador?
and for the Chapada Diamantina, do i need to book a hotel in lencois for the duration of my stay, or will i be sleeping elsewhere during the trekks anyway? can i just arrive there and book the trekks from there?
its my first time posting, so forgive me if i post this in the wrong place or ask the wrong questions :)

First thing you have to take into consideration is that at Reveillon (NYE), when many Brazilians take vacations at the beach or in the countryside, most accomodations sell multi-night (many for December 28 to January 1 or 2) packages at a very high price. Check with all the accomodations you are considering. At that time of year, you can't really show up anywhere in Brazil and expect to find accomodation.

Marau:
From Salvador, you take the car ferry to Bom Despacho on Itaparica Island, and from the ferry terminal in Bom Despacho, an Águia Branca or Cidade Sol bus to Camamu. If you want to go to Barra Grande, you can take the boat from Camamu.

Chapada Diamantina:
There are day trips and overnight ones too.Your choice. Again, plan ahead.
