Do you need to make a reservation? No.Should you make a reservation? Yes you should. You have a very specific desire. If you do not reserve in advance it is possible that there will not be anyone there to meet your need. Yes, there will probably be someone there, but whether or not they'll have room on a camel tour to do exactly what you want to do is unknown.
Secondly, the better guides and camps are well known and people reserve them ahead of time. When you just show up the guides and camps that are available may be the bad ones who no one else wants to use.
If it were me I'd reserve at least a week or so in advance with a guide and camp that comes recommended by trusted sources, such as www.jordanjubilee.com.
Good luck.

I assume you will be arriving either from Wadi Musa (Petra) or from Aqaba. We found it was far cheaper to hook up with a tour, meals and an overnight stay at a camp arranged in Wadi Musa. If you are planning to try this, a backpackers in Wadi Musa called Cleopetra, arranges a highly competitive package. Far cheaper than anything we were offered through travel agents in Aqaba. The camel trek is an add on, as the transport we had was a Mad Max open back jeep for our transport, around the parts of Wadi Rum we were shown during the day time.

Hi,even if you don't know the exact day you will be arriving in wadi Rum, it's still better to get in touch with a guide to know what kind of trip they can make for you... depending on what you want it takes a bit of organization... anyway after writing to a few guide, I choose Atallah from Wadi Rum Jordan Guide. I spend 4 days and 3 nights in the desert. We had great time there! We met his family which is still living in a bedouin tent. We slept in different places every night.
Here is his website : www.wadirumjordanguide.com
Just be careful to not choose some camp which are destroying the beauty of the desert. they build toilet and shower anywhere and they don't really care about the environment.
