Dog owner in Guangzhou?
Hello,I maybe getting an offer to work in Guangzhou, China on a long term basis. My wife and I would like to go, but not without our dog (medium sized mutt, about 42 lbs, probably some hound/terrier mix). Anyone lived in Guangzhou with dogs?
I've done some research on the regulations, but I'd like to talk with someone on the ground with (recent) experience if there is anyone out there. Specifically I'm wondering about how difficult it was to rent a mid-range apartment with a dog. I'm not certain where we would live, but likely around Tianhe or Ersha Island if it's possible. Or possibly Northeast of the city.
I lived in China for 3 years, but it's been about a decade and I've only traveled through Guangzhou.
I'm cross posted this in the Long Haul forum too. Thanks.

I'm probably not much help, but I live in Zhuhai, GD. Many people have dogs where I live - some quite big so I don't think it is a problem with landlords or property managers. If you can afford it, a ground-floor apartment with a garden in a garden complex might be the go. Probably a good way for your wife to meet the neighbours too!3
Most cities do regulate the size/weight of dogs allowed in downtown apartments. But enforcement as lax-- basically just don't be walking your dog when the one or two dognapper vans for the entire city are driving around near your place. And then even if they find you, you can just not answer your door when they knock4
Chinese are kind of nuts about dogs, especially in the more affluent areas, some of the complexes with nice huge courtyards and areas to walk the dog are key, and not near a big busy street. In Shanghai French Concession, we had more breeds of dogs in the complex than we do here in the highrise we have a condo in downtown Chicago. French Poodles are the old school favorites there, but labs and golden retrievers are popular too, and lot of Bijans as well. One guy had a great dane, it was puppy and but was huge, everytime he went for a walk, the all the kids ran for their lives as it wanted to play...hilarious, another guy had a one the biggest and prettiest Dobermans I ever saw, the dog was very timid but took a liking to me as I was the only one that would rough house with him, he would put his front paws on my shoulders and be taller than me, I am 6ft...sweetest dog, and so darn smart. We lived in a luxury condo building and rented a 2 Bedroom, its was 2 towers of 40 floors of 2-3-4 bedrooms, 4 units per floor, so it was huge, but the dogs were only out early morning and around dinner time. Some of the local smaller streets the dogs ran about between the houses, you thought they were lost but they just moved along and darted down drives and thru gates...one always followed my wife home from the grocery for two blocks, then would stop at the main street, and bark at her when she crossed...
