You should combine Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont
by driving route 302 from Portland M.E. to
Burlington V.T. don't be shy
go for it.

Football: You might also want to try for a college game. They can be more enjoyable and more affordable.

Route 302 looks good, I am definitely cutting out North Georgia and sticking to Charleston and Savannah and would much prefer a college football game by the sounds of it. The plan at the moment now looks a little like this:

Boston aroun 11 Oct 2013 for a few days then head to Maine then perhaps along route 302 to Vermont (or just stick around Maine). Fly down to Savannah and spend around a week between tehre and Charleston (stay out in the sticks - may try and find some cool places to stay around these states (Burlington, Boston and Portland and other parts of Maine), any suggestions? Also does anyone know a reliable car company?

We will only fly out of Miami if flights are much cheaper to London than from Savannah or charleston which they very well may be, but I am going to try and avoid it.

Definitley try and catch a football game in Boston.
Any cool live music places or fun bars in Savannah or Charleston does anybody know.
Thank you again everyone for all your help.

College football games are generally on Saturday. Nearer the date, see what there is in the Boston aea the day after you arrive.

Towards the end of your trip
if your going to be in around South Carolina
Georgia then the nearest international airport
would be ATL Atlanta.
What part of the U.K. are you from ?
Delta airlines have direct flights to a number of U.K. cities.
use SKYSCANNER.NET ......BUT you won't get an idea
of prices just yet, so try looking around the middle of
December 2012 onwards.

edvarno1 : I know crazy hey, still you gotta try.

We are thinking of doing Maine and Boston and then flying south and either a road trip from Nashville to Charleston and Savannah or from Miami to Charleston to Savannah.

Road trips a a lot cheaper if you return the car where you rented it. Forget Nashville and Miami. Fly to the Savannah airport and rent a car there for Savannah, Beaufort or Hilton Head, and Charleston. Not just for the expense, but also so that you will have time to do things other than drive.

HELSINKISHEPS 81,
Why are you thinking of departing from Miami ?
What part of the U.K. are you from ?
decisions decisions
Consider flying with AERLINGUS.COM /
from the U.K. via Dublin to Boston, N.Y. JFK and / or Orlando MCO
U.S. Immigration is based in Dublin see...
DUBLINAIRPORT.COM / U.S. PRE-CLEARANCE
good luck.

Yofletch - ahh actually Dublin would be a great idea. I live in Nottingham, England and was going to fly from london but my sister who is coming lives in Dublin, so either way one of us would have to make the short haul flight so that sounds like a great idea - good thinking Batman.

VinnyD - yeah that's probably not a bad idea (I am so easily influenced) Is Savannah and Charleston preferable over Miami and Nashville? - we do like our live music. If so I think I will just do that - I love road trips but I also like to be settled and have lazy people watching days as well.
