We are a French - Indian couple who live in india and travelling to Vietnam with our 2year old daughter.
We have 14 days and are going from north to south
Following is our itenary:
Hoi An - 3 nights (flying from Hanoi to danang)
Con Dao or Phu Quoc -5 nights
Ho Chi Min - 2 nights
We love chilling on the beach and a bit of snorkelling and like colonial / heritage towns / old cultural capitals and love to try local food and since we live in a big city want to avoid city life
1.Wanted suggestions on which of the two islands con Dao or Phu quoc has nicer beaches with pristine waters(good snorlelling) and has decent emergency healthcare (keeping in mind that it is an island)
2. Our budget for hotels is 50 us dollars per night.is that a fair price for a bed n breakfast in Hanoi / hcmc or bungalow on the beach (no air con ),any recommendations for boutique hotels or vintge guesthouses in Hanoi/hcmc/Phu quoc or Hoi an,pl pm it to me
3. Is there an official website (in English ) where we can book train tickets..coz the 2 websites which claim to be official look like travel agencies..OR which are the best airlines for domestic travel within Vietnam (hear of air mekong)

1What time of year were you planning to come to VN? This makes a bit of difference to the advice people give, especially in relation to things like air con and train and flight bookings.
And where were you thinking of taking the train? From Da Nang to HCMC? It's quite a long trip and would include one night on a train. From the trains I have travelled on in VN I have assumed that they have been running constantly since they were commissioned with only a cursory clean once a week at the turn round point in Hanoi or HCMC. With a two year old you might find the train toilets a challenge, especially on such a long trip.

We are travelling from 24th dec to 6th jan ...and I have read that the north is a little cold and can also rain around hanoi during this period and the south is drier(especially phu quoc) and normally sunny..is that a fair understanding of the weather around new year's eve
And agree with you, train is not really an option keeping in mind the long journeys and our daughter's patience levels..we will fly instead, just checked air Mekong..not so expensive(the same price as the trains)

3Yeah your understanding about the weather is pretty correct. In late December - early January in central VN the weather can be really good for sightseeing as the wet has gone, it is not too hot and the cold weather usually arrives at Tet. But that also means not ideal beach weather in the centre in Dec- Jan.
I have been to Phu Quoc but not Con Dao. I enjoyed it but wonder if five nights is not a little too long as there is not a lot to do, although it was great for relaxing. But I was there in July or August so you'll need to check the weather then with others who live in the south. I took buses through the delta from HCMC to Rach Gia and then the ferry to Phu Quoc and then flew back to HCMC.
My experience has been that booking flights and trains outside VN is much more expensive than doing it after you have arrived. I have never used Air Mekong, only Vietnam Airlines. Flying between major cities such as Hanoi and Da Nang or Hue and HCMC has always cost me around $70 per flight when booked here. Their main drawback is that they do cancel and delay flights, especially ones that are not full, and give no warning. The first you know is when you get to the airport.

I can't answer your questions since I will only visit Vietnam for the first time this December. But I have a stay booked in Con Dao and would like to point out a practical consideration regarding the limited availability of accommodation especially for that period. If Con Dao is your choice you need to book asap.

Will check on the weather in phu quoc around Dec-early Jan.
And I have also heard about airlines canceling at the last moment if they arnt full..will plan around that
Agree,I checked on trip advisor and agoda that there are Only 6 decent places to stay and most of them are booked out around new years..so which means we will just head to phu quoc
If anyone knows of decent accommodation on bai sao beach, phu quoc..PL PM it to me..
Have u been to phu quoc ,is it possible to do snorkelling day trips from there..and do u know how is the weather around late decemeber in phu quoc

7We just came from Phu Quoc and really enjoyed it. We took our 2 year old boy, and the place where we stayed, Mai House, had at least three other families with children. We don't SCUBA or snorkel, but others who do said they had a nice time on the island. We spent five days and were not bored.
We followed a similar itinerary: Hanoi - Hue -Hoi An - Phu Quoc - HCMC. In retrospect, I'd have skipped Hue. If I were you, I'd spend one less day in Hoi An and one more in Saigon, unless you were thinking of doing day trips out of Hoi An.
In Hanoi, rooms at the Art Hotel were a tad small, but their service was incredible, highly recommend it. Did not like our place in Hoi An.
From your itinerary, I don't think you need to book train tickets. Vietnam Airlines was cheap (we booked mad early) and reliable.
