1 month in SE Asia - where do I start?Hi all, I'm planning to take a month off work from Xmas to the end of January and think backpacking SE Asia is the best pick for a short and cheap trip.
I haven't been to Asia before so I need some advice on where to go. I really like the look of Vietnam and Laos and given that I only have 1 month I think just doing those 2 countries is reasonably do-able. I'm a typical backpacker so I'll consider any suggestions.
But where do I start? I'm thinking fly into Ho Chi Minh city, traveling up the coast to Hanoi and across to Laos. Maybe 2 weeks in each country. Any suggestions?
This website is proving to give a few good ideas:
Cheers in advance.

2Some more info...
It looks like I'll be flying in either on Xmas day or a few days later so I will be there for New Years. I think just the idea of New Years in a new place with other backpackers will be incredible but I would like to experience something different to a nightclub party (I can do that anywhere).
Things to see/do:
- Beaches, rivers, mountains, lakes etc in terms of the nature sight seeing. My guess is that Ha Long Bay is pretty touristy so maybe something that's just as good but a little less known.
- Would like to see some markets, temples and other unusual or interesting towns and villages.
- I also love riding motorcycles so I'm wondering if there's a chance of hiring or borrowing one for a week or so.
- Food and drink of course.
All suggestions welcome, cheers.

Try the Ninh Binh area for inland karst/limestone scenery. Also has SE Asia's largest temple in Bai Dinh.
Markets and temples. Just about everywhere. Some great scenery and a good market in Da Lat area in the Central Highlands. Ha Noi has a few markets and the temple of Literature is beautiful.
Food and drink: again almost everywhere. Ha Noi, Nha Trang, Da Nang and HCMC have some microbrewery bar/restaurants

4With one month I would suggest just choosing one country, judging by your interests, Vietnam.
For beaches, have a look at Phu Quoc in the south, Mui Ne and Nha Trang. As above definetly include Ninh Binh and I would suggest Cat Ba as a base to see Halong Bay. Dont miss Hue, loads of Temples to explore there..
