Dominica by bicycle

Hello,
Is there any bicycle to rent in Dominica? How good are the streets and is it a good idea to travel through the island on a bicycle? I would be pleased to get some advice form people with Dominica experience. I would stay approximately 6 days in Dominica this December.

Thank’s for your info.

2 things to consider: it is VERY mountainous but, considering you are in good shape and up to the challenge an even bigger issue may be that many of the roads are narrow and there are VERY deep (for example, a foot deep) drainage gutters on each side. It's one of the scariest things about driving and I would think it would even cause more trepidation in a cyclist. These drainage ditches aren't uncommon in the rainiest parts of the Caribbean. They are most prevalent around the towns like Roseau, but you'll find them lining the roads all around the island wherever storm surges are common.

Dominica is the Last place I would ride a bike. The above poster is right on.
Most of the roads are extremely up and down steep, and narrow!! I did not see bike rentals, not that there are none, but, I doubt it. There is a public bus system [mini vans} that run all around the island. Taxi drivers will also take you anywhere, and because the island is so small, it doesn't cost that much. I think we paid
35$ US, from Roseau to the airport.
Have fun!! Dominca is the best! and, the people are really nice!!!

Thank you for the helpful news, I didn’t realise the mentioned problems before. I am happy now to know that there would be better ways to travel around the Island ;-)

There is a bicycle rental place in town but how good those bikes are, who knows. You do see kids riding bikes around but very few and far inbetween and you have to pretty fit. Its all mountains and hills and I wouldn't trust a small car or scooter going up some of these steep places.

Buses are cheap but there is no set schedule as they leave when they are full. So a good option if you have no time constraints, otherwise taxis are your next best option or hiring a car.

The roads are very very bad. I don't think its the greatest idea.
