Going to Taiwan in November - need some info

Hi

Off to Taiwan at the beginning of November and have a few queries:

1) Does anyone have recommendations for car rental firms? We want to collect and drop off the vehicle at the airport.

2) Does anyone have up-to-data information on the ferry to Lanyu? Specifically, is it still running in November?

3) Are there any good places to go out on a boat to see whales and dolphins?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi,
Yep, the boat (and airpline, if you can get a seat!) still runs to Lanyu in November, but only from Taidong; the service from Kengting stops at the end of October because the seas get too rough. Try one of the following (assuming you can speak chinese, or can find someone that does) to check times, although there should be a boat a day:

Lanyu Star (蘭嶼之星): (089) 281-503
Kai Shiuan Marine Transport (凱旋輪): (089) 281-047
Green Island Star (綠島之星): (089) 330-756

In case you want to take a look, there's some more info and photos about Lanyu on my blog at

and

November is a bit late for dolphin/whale watching as far as I know: it's good around Turtle Island in Yilan County, but again boats stop running at the end of October. You may find trips still running off Hualien.

Enjoy yourself!

There are whale-watching tours from Hualien. We were there in September this year, and asked about them as they have 'killer whales', however at that time of the year the operator said it was uncertain whether you would see them or not. But of course you would see either whales or dolphins, and they do have a guarantee that if you don't see anything you will get a free tour to go out again (assuming that you have the time to spend another day looking for them).

Hi again,
A friend just came back from Lanyu. The boat is still running, but not every day so be sure to check when it's running if you plan to sail there. My friend managed to get a flight at short notice, so you might consider that if boats don't work for your schedule.
