La paz, To/from Airport and accomodation
Hi guys, solo traveller. have a couple of concern hoping to get some answer1 accomodation in Lapaz: I rarely prebook accomodation but don't know how altitute sickness is going to affect me. can anyone recommend a basic accomodation, not looking for anything fancy. as long as I have my own room shared bath is ok.
2. transportation from the airport to the city. local bus? or taxi? is taxi safe?
Altitute sickness kicked my ass when I landed in Cuzco and Tibet years ago. just wanted my first night taken cared of. thank you

Can recommend hostal Lion's Palace (centrally located near calle Sagarnaga), don't know if they have dorms but a single private room (with private toilet, cable tv and free wifi) is only 80 Bs.Would not take a bus but regular taxis are safe, can't remember the exact price but what I remember it was something like 50 Bs to the city.

Cheaper places usually don't take reservations and if they do they don't tend to keep it, so you still be better of just showing up if your flight is not due to arrive in odd hours. Only reasonable transport from the airport is a taxi at about 60bs.Drink coca tea and chew coca leaves (with alkalizer, available locally) - they work wonders regarding the altitude.

Hi,I have stayed at the Hotal Milton several times when traveling in Bolivia. It is downtown a couple of blocks from the witches market. Nice place with a reasonable rate. About $15.00 US for single room with private bath. Safe, and a great location. Really helpful and friendly staff, and great breakfast is included. A travel agency is next door with services to Titicaca and etc. I highly recommend it.

Milton is ok, but it's midrange not budget. I suggest booking a room with them if OP decides, recently they screwed my reservation (normal) and gave me twin room instead of a double, when I've asked to get a double bed they said they are fully booked. This was the lowest season possible - end of January.Breakfast is a joke, make sure to go across the street to buy some saltenas and bring them over, because all you going to get is a toast, coffee and some disgusting juice imitation.
Booking.com is an easy way and price is better than walk-in.

In La Paz, estrella andina and sol andino (think they're from the same owner) are nice and cheap for what they offer. Theyre on calle illampu centrally located. They wont charge more than 15-20 US for a night. If you want a bit more comfort on calle sagarnaga hostal nayra and eva palace are more expensive but really nice. In order to tranfer from the aiport use the taxis labeled AEROPUERTO generally blue colored. Otherwise, you can take the minibuses labled the same but you'd have to know the city well to know where to get off. DO not take the taxis that look like a private car and have only a small TAXI sign on the front windshield.7

I stayed in two places last time I was in La Paz and was happy with both. One was called A La Maison and it's run by French people. It's an apart-hotel and the rooms have mini kitchen, so if you think you're going to have bad sorochi and you just want to stay in your room the first day and drink coca tea and watch cable TV, as I did, this was a good place. It's a nice old colonial house and the district is safe, however, there were a lot of creaky floorboards and it's not as cheap as the competition. Also the heater in the room wasn't the greatest.The second hotel I stayed in, Cruz de los Andes, was more modern, but in the city centre (Calle Aroma which is near the big street market). It was quiet, but near to lots of bars and restaurants and about half the price of A La Maison. The rooms were smaller, but there were heaters, if you ask for them, and cable TV. Would recommend this hotel over A La Maison, but my sorochi had gone when I stayed here and I was really just using it as a place to sleep.

Here's a link for Cruz de los Andes on Hostel World. It's $25 for a single ensuite. This is a good website for finding quality budget accomodation. Worth browsing through their listings if you want something specific or cheaper. $25 for a single it's rather a lot in La Paz, I've paid same amount for a double in midrange accommodation.
