Unpaid tram fines in Melbourne
Hia.I'm heading back out to Australia for a couple of weeks soon, very excited to be going back but have just thought of something that may be a bit of a problem!
When I was in Melbourne I had two tram fines for not having a ticket. I think they would have sent them to the backpackers that I was staying out but in all honesty, I didn't pay them. Looking back, I'm embarrassed that I tried to freeload on the tram anyway.
I left Australia in September 2007.
Does anyone know if I'm going to have a problem on arrival? I have a different passport now, but obviously same name and DOB! I'd be happy enough to pay the fines, but the thought of being turned away at the airport makes my stomach churn!

Immigration is a federal government department whereas chasing unpaid tram fines is a state sherrifs dutys, if you get pulled up by vic police and they do a check on you even then it's highly unlikely theyll get you for it, due to different I.D and address.And there'll be near to no chance that it would even show up on interstate checks by agents of the filth.
Out of personal experience I've flown out and back into the country and had númerous vic police roadside checks over the 6 years I had an outstanding Queensland police warrant and nothing ever showed up- till I went back to queensland.

An ex (many moons ago) was let off a crime in South Australia on the grounds of self defence unless caught again doing a similar crime. Years after that, he was picked up in Sydney for car conversion. When they fingerprinted him, up popped his old crime. They did him over then released him (I think on bail) next day. A fast exit from Oz (you could freely come and go then without passports) back to NZ where he changed his name by dead poll and could go back to Oz.Charming sort of the crim type but thankfully I never married him.

1. This will NOT be an issue with immigration. They will have no record of this.2. BUT, as has been mentioned above, if you are pulled over by police, or picked up for any crime or misdemeanour in Vic, it is possible this will show up, and possibly have you fined. But it's not worth much more than that, and you can easily plead that you never got the notice.
3. In no other state will this be an issue, so if you're not going to Victoria, even this slim possibility is non-existent.

It all depends on who issued the fines. I'm pretty certain tram fines are not an issue.Speeding tickets and traffic offences are technically a national thing implemented by the states with offence shared... but not always handled as such. ie I've had two minor interstate speeding fines. One offence I lost a point off my drivers license and the other didn't...

thanks guys.... All good - I don't plan on being a naughty boy this time round. Older and much more mature of course this time round.It's just one of those things that jump into your mind as you're lying in bed about to go to sleep...!
All I want to do is go in, have a look around, boost the economy a little and get some sun while I'm there!
