15What about Xcalak? Have you considered that? There are some cute cabanas for rent on the beach in Xcalak, it would be cheaper and less touristy.
I did this tour back in 2004, out of Playa del Carmen. Really, really enjoyed it. Back then it WAS a lot cheaper...;)
In 2009 my friend, her two daughters and I went to Xel-Ha , we were there before in 1999 and loved it! Yes, it is touristy, but it was a lot of fun! You can get away from the mass of people as you snorkel to your heart's content or float in inner tubes. They expanded it since '99.
And Playa del Carmen is tons of fun!
P.S. Personally, I would be bored to tears on Isla Mujeres. But that is just me.

16@dlglidden #8......for some reason you seem to want to cast an opinion on my post and me as a traveller without knowing me or anything about me........having travelled extensively and having a keen interest in the culture and history of wherever i travel and respect for wherever/whoever i meet you could not be more wrong in your silly assumption.......i only climbed the main Pyramid at Coba because the authorities or whoever is in charge of maintaining the site allow it....as in all the other ruins i visited climbing ruins is not permitted so i didn't or had no interest in doing so......and no i also did not buy any souvenirs
