Question about Agra > Delhi > flight home

Hi,

I have a 1:30am flight home on 12/2/12. My current plan is to catch the 8:30pm #2001 train from Agra to Delhi on 12/1/12 and then get a cab to the airport. Is this really a bad idea, timewise? What are my options for getting back to Delhi much earlier on 12/1/12.

Thanks.

You could take the Punjab Mail which leaves Agra at 1755 and gets into New Delhi at 2115 or the Taj Express leaving Agra at 1855 and getting into Nizamuddin at 2200.

For those who can make a better guess than I ...

#2001 is the New Delhi Shatabdi, originating in Bhopal (2:45PM), arriving at New Delhi station (the only Delhi area stop, and its terminus) at 10:45PM. Only stop between Agra Cantonment at New Delhi is Mathura (1 minute).

This is about the most likely train of all to be on schedule between Agra and Delhi. It is likely to get running priority over almost everything (which is worth a lot, though no guarantee). In addition, almost all trains from Agra to Delhi start from far, far away, and this one only comes from Bhopal (not exactly next door, but a lot closer than, say, Trivandrum).

It seems to me that, at that time of night (meaning that Delhi traffic should have abated), if the train is not at all late, the timing should be workable (though a bit tight, as this is about when passport control and security at the international terminal will be busiest). At the start of December, you are getting into the fog season in the Ganges/Yamuna plain, though not deep in it, and fog would be the most likely cause of a late Shatabdi.

I personally would not try it, as I really, really, don't like to risk missing my outbound flight. But, I think your odds are quite good (though they would not be good enough for me).

Because so many alternate trains come from so far away, there probably aren't any preferable evening trains to the Shatabdi. Your best alternates would be to take a much, much earlier train, or a much earlier bus or car-and-driver.

Incidentally, OP, don't take any of this as a complaint that you didn't provide enough information. Unlike so many posters, you did tell us all we needed to know, just not in quite the easiest form (which you should not have been expected to guess).

I would take the Taj Express.

Do remember to take into account of having to be at the Airport three hours before take off for security checks , and they can be lengthy on leaving India ...

Whoops did not read the previous lengthy post explaining what i've just posted , but still it's a very important thing to take into account and it can not be stressed enough , Indian security is very lengthy and time consuming and in my opinion you really can't arrive at the Airport to soon for it ..

I personally would rather arrive an hour earlier than is necessary than miss my flight , at the end of the day your only more than likely be sitting around your Hotel anyway ...

Thanks for the replies.

Looking at the options listed, I do now think that taking the 8:30p Shatabdi Express on 12/1 will be cutting it too close for my liking. I do see a Keraler Express #2025 leaving at 10:28am, so that would be a better choice, or I might decide to get back to Delhi a day earlier instead.

I agree with you. Why take a chance and stress yourself.
Kerala express at 10:28AM or a day earlier to Delhi will be better and relaxing.
