Off the beaten track around Bali and Lombok

Hi all,

Heading to Bali for about 2.5 weeks just after New Years. I want to find some places that are little bit off the normal tourist trail. Maybe some more remote islands or small beach town on islands around Bali or Lombok. Wouldn't mind doing some fishing or spear fishing too.

Also if anyone knows anything about chartering a boat for a few days to sail around the islands that would great.

Thanks for your help!

You might want to read this string on hidden gems in Bali, and within this string you will find links to other discussions on this topic:

You can also find a few tips here:

Suffice it to say that in Bali (and Lombok) there are lots of areas which are never seen or enjoyed by the typical tourist who visits here. It just takes a little effort to find them.

You might look into West Bali. It might offer what you are looking for. It is quite remote and quiet.

If you can ride, get an IDP, hire a motorbike in Kuta Lombok, buy yourself a IDR 20000 map of Lombok and start exploring. You can be off the beaten track 15 minutes after leaving Kuta. Just exploring the south west corner could soak up a week. For photos and advice go to: http://journals.worldnomads.com/merantau/ and http://www.panoramio.com/user/2281781

#4 If you mean local motor bike renters - just rent from your hotel not from people on the street. Hotels have their reputations to keep and most are very careful about where they source their bikes from. However do be aware if you damage a bike you will be responsible for repairs.

OP re chartering a boat - the seas can be very rough at that time of year and the ferries between Lombok and Bali are often cancelled for a few days. This year the winds were particularly bad.I do not think it would be a good time to charter a boat.
