Amman to Petra?

Any suggestions for accommodation in Amman - we will be arriving in the evening and just need somewhere to lay our heads fbore heading to Petra the next day. Should we go into Amman, or just go to directly to somewhere like Madaba? Any advice on specific hotels (mid-range, we travel a lot but are past the hostel time of life) as well as options for transporting ourselves down to Petra would be very appreciated.

Welcome, First, are you sure you don't just want to head directly to Wadi Musa? Second, how do you intend to get to Wadi Musa?

If you wish to take the bus then you'll have to wait until the next day and you might as well stay in Amman since that is where the bus leaves from. If you are renting a car then you could spend the night in Madaba and take the Kings Highway the next day. If you plan on taking a taxi you should consider just heading straight to Wadi Musa. Why take a taxi somewhere else just to backtrack the next day for thirty minutes of the trip?

As far as transportation recommendations (I listed the options above), there are advantages and disadvantages to each. The bus is the least expensive but offers the least flexibility, renting a car is the most expensive (when you consider all the costs) but is the most convenient and the taxi is somewhere in between.

Good luck.

We don't get in until about 7 pm so thought we'd just stay nearby and make the journey to Wadi Musa the next morning. Perhaps it makes more sense to just rent a car from the Amman airport and drive to Wadi Musa the night we arrive? Approximately how long is the drive? And what would be the cost of a taxi from Amman airport to Wadi Musa?

Many thanks for your input!

The drive to Wadi Mousa from the Airport around 2 and half hours to 3 hours and the Airport taxi rate is 72 JD .

Greetings from Jordan ! I see that you will arrive at 1900 hrs. You will probably be another 45 min -1 hour to get out of the airport. And depending where you are travelling from you could be quite tired. It is a great idea to rent a car from the airport and stay in Madaba overnite to get refreshed. A great hotel is the Salome Hotel which has rates incl. breakfast, great maps of Jordan and very good beds!! The next morning you see the Churchs and mosaics in Madaba, then you can take the King's Highway and stop at Karak and see the Castle along the way to Petra. A gorgeous drive. Enjoy! t.

You can hire a car, or you can take a taxi down to Wadi Musa quite cheaply. 54 JD for the whole taxi down via the Kings Highway, which is the most spectacular road. The trip takes 5 hours including a one hour stop at Karak castle. Maybe a bit longer if you're driving yourself.
When coming back, the Desert Road is the fastest one, flat and uninteresting. About 3 hours, and 6 JD each by shared taxi.

Well it depends on your budget for hotels. Madaba is closer to airport. The airport bus to downtown is 3 JD if you're interested in saving a few $$. We stayed in an a hotel in Amman this year for about 15 euro a night. I see renting car prices given...Thrifty rent a car will deliver a car and pick up directly to your hotel for about 30 euro per 24 hour period. If you have the budget, would recommend this. You can then drive yourself to Amman, Wadi Musa, and back up via the Dead sea for a float. Be aware that some busses do not run on the Muslim weekend in the afternoon, so either catch an early bus or expect a taxi/share taxi....PM me if you need details.
