Serbia-Bosnia-Croatia-Slovenia-Serbia Itin

Hi all,
We are a couple from New Zealand in our mid twentie planning a road trip in mid-late May 2013. I am originally from Serbia so we will be flying to Belgrade renting a car and visiting family for a couple of days in Nis (south central Serbia). We on spending about 10 days roadtripping through Croatia and Slovenia and then back to Serbia.

Our initial itinerary idea is below. We would appreciate any suggestions on alternative routes or stops or activities.

Nis- Srajevo
Sarajevo 1 day

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik and surrounding area 1 day

Dubrovnik to Split
2-3 day in Split to explore surrounding area?

Split to Plitvicka Jezera
2 nights

Plitvicka Jezera to Zagreb

Zagreb to Ljubljana
overnight in Zagreb?

Ljublana to Bled (day trip)
2 nights in Ljubljana.

Ljubljana to Zagreb

Zagreb to Belgrade

Many thanks for your advice!

Several points:

Overall, I don't think you have taken into account the driving times.

Sarajevo is worth more than a whole day. Spending a whole day there means spending two nights.

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik is a longer drive especially since it is worth while to stop in Mostar for a few hours to see the bridge and have a meal.

Two nights in Split is plenty in my view. You need half a day to see the old city and then you can spend half a day either visiting the Roman ruins at Solun or the nice town of Trogir.

One the drive from Split to Pltivice Lakes, consider stopping in Sibenik, Krka National Park and or Zadar.

It's a lot of driving to get to Ljubljana and while it is a pleasant city, I think I would probably give it a miss. Instead spend a little time elsewhere in Croatia, a night in Zagreb and then on the on the return stop in either Osijek, Croatia or Novi Sad, Serbia for a day.

If you really want to go to Bled, better stay there for 2 nights and make Ljubljana as a daytrip from Bled. Went there in April and feel really disappointed, but Bled is truly a heaven.
