For Now in Iran You Could be Better Off With €, £ than $

I am seeing and hearing conflicting reports as to real street/market daily exchange rates for $ in Iran these days, after last Tuesday's currency collapse that is. Since Saturday rates from 28500 to 32000 have been reported although many exchange shops have stopped altogether buying/selling dollars while some others have been shut down due to central bank rules violation, among others. Meanwhile, a friend told me that a report by Iran national radio had mentioned yesterday that locals are allowed to purchase up to $1000 at certain pre-designated exchange shops at a preferred rate of 28500. So I am guessing the 'true' market rate for $ should be significantly higher. The govt is quite sensitive about $ price and how high it goes but those concerns apparently do not exist as far as other major currencies like € and £ are concerned. So if u are keen on making major purchase Iran, like a rug, I think you will be better off with currencies other your than $ because they are now exchanged/sold easier and closer to prevailing market prices, too.

PS I cannot find today's rate for $. If u changed money today, let me know. thanks.

Thanks for this and all the other updates you have been posting. I'm a UK citizen travelling to Iran later this week. I had intended to change most of my £'s to euros and some dollars. Would I be better off just bring £'s?

Did prices surge up as well as a result of this Rial crash?

Yes, prices for some food and basic commodities have gone up 20 to 30 percent in the last month alone but dollar and other major currencies have almost doubled in price. So tourists like u for sure are to benefit quite a bit from this nasty rial collapse.amir.

I actually didn't know about the collapse of rials.

But this is my experience so far.

28th Sept: airport official rate €1 = 15532 r
29th Sept: couch surfer host Tehran €1 = 30000 r
4th Oct: Hotel Kerman €1 = 35000 r
11th Oct: Hotel Shiraz €1 = 40000 r

I don't shop around, these are rate I got quoted by the first place I needed to change money.
