Yes, laketraveller, my friend CarolAnn did go to Egyp,t but only 4 days. She is an avid traveller and fellow New Yorker, but I might have to not follow her advice this time! I really feel strongly about going alone. It makes sense for me! Thanks for all the suggestions. Also thanks for reminding me NOT to get hung up on the details. I am actually most nervous about getting to the train station and buying a sleeper train to Aswan and hoping I don't get on wrong train.

Check out the web site Man in Seat 61 / Egypt for thorough information about the trains, including where and how to purchase tickets.

There will be plenty of people around at the train station happy to help you. Don't be afraid to ask.

Good luck.

Hello. I am a 53 year-old Cdn. woman travelling solo to Egypt in late March/April. I was looking online for advice etc. when I saw your post. I travelled to
Machu Picchu last year, and enjoy the excitement of travelling alone. I have just begun taking notes about Egypt from various sources online, and feel confident that by asking the right questions from others whom have been there, and researched travel sites, everything will go well. I will walk with a purpose, reframe from being overly friendly to men I do not know, and trust in advise/recommendations offered by hotel staff. When the time comes, and I visit Egypt, I will post how it went for me. Best of luck with your plans!

But I am older and do not think I will be harrassed as a younger traveller would be

A friend of mine from work who was about 60 and who, ahem, looked her age, found she was harrassed in Egypt just as much as if she was younger.

She couldnt get over it- 'I am an old and wrinkled woman' she said! 'What is wrong with them!'

Thanks cgd and raki_man! 3 more months and I go to Egypt.....right now there is a travel alert ending 5/4/13 (date I am to arrive in Cairo!). Keeping an eye on state dept website for updates and newspapers and news too. I hope our govt says I cannot travel to Egypt....THAT'S what I'm afraid of!

On the bike rental situation, someone brought up a good point....WHAT do you do with the bike? Do they supply a lock or don't people bother with bikes? Thanks!

Have you gone yet? I just got back from there in Jan. (we were 3) and I want to go in June by myself. I need a travel partner. Could we go together? I want to do my own thing in Luxor, and I don't need any help, I just need someone to have as a contact, to make me feel I haven't done it alone you might say.
Egypt is safe . I am 55 and female. I cannot go before June because I am a teacher and school is not out.
