Heya spcxxx, unfortunately I don't think you will get lucky. On the Koman side there usually are small boats tied up for hire.
Can't say anything about the pricing though but during mid-summer when the bus-ferry was overcrowded they frequently left with groups. Don't know if there would be anyone in the afternoon. In Fierze I never saw small boats.

Now what you could do is to ask local people in advance or to check with the cafe owner at the ferry dock in Fierze. I had the number of the driver/captain of the ferry but I can't find it anymore :(

If nothing else works, you could send me exact date, rough time and number of persons and I will try to organize a private ride for you.

Thanks for answering me...

So it looks like the only 100% way is to go with the car to Fierze for morning boat and return with it back and continuing with the car to Skodra.
It is hard to predict exact time if i am traveling distances with a car using narrow roads, crossing broders, unplaned technical problems arrives...

If you are traveling a lot in Albania, maybe you know something about roads:

sh23 (kukes to bajram curri) - i heard it is narrow but with new asphalt all the lenght
sh22 (bajram curri to fushe) - narrow too but same like sh23
sh5 (fushe to skodra) - many holes, old asphalt all the lenght
sh31 (kukes to peshkopi) - there is some parallel road too, i read that this paralel road is `curvy` but good surface and the sh31 is much worse

unfortunately there is no way to get to fierze from montenegro avoiding kosovo (insurance problems), so i'm looking for way from macedonia...

Probably no other possibility if you want to do it in day. Consider leaving the car in Shkoder (I read you're coming from Montenegro) and hiking from Valbona to Theth or to take the bus to BC, stay overnight and leave the next morning by ferry to get back to Shkoder.

SH23: Road from Kukes to Bajram Curri is under construction, means the part just behind Kukes up to Krume was in August unpaved but besides of the short stretch along the lake in sweet condition (speeds above 60km/h possible). After Krume the road is almost completely new asphalt but very windy - not suitable for people who get motion sickniss so to say :)

SH22/23/5 (or whatever it might be) I only know the stretch from the highway to BC. This is a long again very windy journey but the road is general in a good condition, as you say old asphalt.

SH31 Apparently Google doesn't put a name on the newer nice road a little bit further to the East. This one is again windy (if I remember rightly not as bad as the ones to BC) but brand new asphalt - great condition again.
The old road along the river is scenic but is gravel only, many exposed rocky parts and some bad stretches towards the junction Lura Lakes/Peshkopi - if you want to travel fast definitely not the best choice.

Insurance should set you back 30€ (some say they paid 50€) for 14 days (minimum) Kosovo, driving through Macedonia might add the same amount for petrol.

many thanks for your time...

i like curvy narrow mountain roads with low traffic :o)
no need to hurry up, just to see the nature and stop frequently to take photos...

so it looks like we have a winner, i have low sports car so i need as good asphalt surface as possible - but few km with bad gravel surface is driveable.
I hope that the SH23 will be done completely next year in summer.

I'm planning to do this trip on the way back from greece, so thru macedonia it is OK this time. Last year we went from greece thru albania too, and i don't regret except 40 km of horrible road before hani i hotit (was under construction that time)

about Kosovo - it just feels like be robbed to pay so much money just to travel several km in short time thru Peje, that's why i better avoid it.

btw. what do you know about ongoing reconstruction of beautiful SH20 road (thru Vermosh)?
I read that the crossing to MNE is planned too at Grabom village (in case it is not asphalted whole already) .

Yep that part from Shkoder to Hani Hotit is finished by now and probably one of the finest pieces of road in Albania.
This year road construction will leap forward as it's an election year, construction projects underway for years didn't move for month but just before election day everything will change ;)

SH20 work was well underway last time I passed (August 2012) but only 3km passed the road snakes down into the Cemi Canyon behind Rrapsh were prepared, so I'm afraid it won't be paved further than Tamara in any case.

Thanks for the answer, so the next 30km till MNE border at Vermosh will be still `off road` type?
Or is it good quality non-paved road?

I read that this SH20 is very scenic and worth the trouble, i can use it even later in next years - this will be not the last visit to Albania i hope ;o)
