Mexico - where to go?!?!Ok - so my friend and I are going traveling around Mexico Caribbean for 3 weeks and I want some advice. We are flying into Cancun mid November and have no plans apart from a few nights booked in Cancun. We want adventure, don't mind going off the beaten track but also want some quality down time of amazing beaches. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind we are 2 young woman traveling on our own so want to stay safe as well!! Also happy to hop on ferries or planes for anything worth it!! Thankin you in advance :)

2My first reaction after reading your comments/questions was to suggest that you pick a different country to visit, one which you have an interest in seeing and a purpose to the trip. My recommendation is that you first read the FAQ at the top, of the forum discussions. Second, take the time to read through recent and archived discussions, many of which ask similar questions. Thirdly, stop at your local independent bookseller or public library and thumb through some guidebooks for travel in Mexico. Fourthly, after you've done these things you should be able to develop a suggested itinerary. Fifthly, stop back here with your itinerary and ask for some reaction. We don't know you, your friend, your likes/dislikes or budget. You know those things and are in the best position to determine what's right for you.

4When traveling with friends who have not been to Yucatan, I try to take them by Coba. Book a night at the on site Club Med and rent a bike for the ruin-all money well spent

This is my first time on a travel forum and I am thinking it's not someplace I need to spend any more time after reading LW's reply. There is a much kinder and more polite way your could have said the same thing. I have had amazing trips backpacking around in various countries without knowing where I would end up. Smile, ask locals where to eat, stay, visit. Smile, be kind, be respectful, have an adventure, end up staying with your new friends in their homes instead of a hostel/hotel. It's not rocket science! I signed up for this forum to look for some new ideas of where to go in Mexico that I haven't been yet... but- I think I'll just show up and (gasp) maybe not even bring a guide book.

6To Alaska. This Forum is chock full of ideas of where to go and what to do in Mexico. All that is asked is that the poster take SOME TIME to LOOK at all the previous postings, and then ask specific questions. Many posters think that the Forum will prepare a whole trip, without any specfiic information given. .LW is a regular on this Forum, and to reply to the same questions over and over is annoying, and to point the poster to other areas, and yes, to ask the poster to check previous information is not unkind. Glad that you are the kind of traveller who is able to manage so well with just a smile, but I'm sure that you will find lots of useful information here if you take the time to do so.

7Hannah7140--It's great that you've developed a somewhat spontaneous travel style that is not entirely guidebook driven, and also that you'll spend three weeks in Mexico, presumably entering and leaving the country via Cancun's airport.
If you look around a bit on this forum/branch you'll encounter many posts helpfully answering questions. LW does that often here himself. He's not always unnecessarily critical of others, nor are the rest of here all newbie devouring monsters.
I agree with others above that it would be helpful if you would, in addition to posting your query here, also do some research on your own. With three weeks available, you could enjoyably travel to locations within four Mexican states: Quintana Roo (where Cancun and other Caribbean resorts are located), Yucatan, Campeche, and/or Chiapas. The two web pages below provide links to lots of helpful information about interesting places in those states.

You could help us out by mentioning some of the places that you've already visited in Mexico, either enjoyably or otherwise. Also, one of the ways in which travelers vary is the amount of Spanish fluency that they have. The more you tell about yourself as a traveler, the better able people here will be to give you good advise. My own "favorite places" might not necessarily fit your interests or travel style.

9As others have said before, some of the top tourist attractions in Yucatan are:
Tulum: Spectacular Mayan ruins on an amazing beach.
Isla Mujeres: Beautiful island near Cancun
Playa del Carmen: a beach resort town that is a bit more scaled down than Cancun itself.
Isla Holbox: another nice island, great for birdwatchers.
Chichen Itza: The most famous Mayan ruins (one of the new seven wonders of the world).
Hope this gives you some ideas.

11I really loved the beaches south of Tulum. We stayed at a great place called Jade up in tree houses overlooking the beach. Met another Woman, Fanny Barry from the US who gave me private yoga instruction each day for $10. I wasn't able to find Jade, but found this hotel on Tripadvisor , ranked #2 for alot less than #1 Ahau Tulum
Carretera a Boca Paila Km 7, Tulum beach zone. There are plenty of cenotes for fresh water swimming and snorkeling and nearby Tulum for ruins. The beach is awesome with super clear, calm water for swimming. ou could also take in the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. Enjoy!
