Budgeting Help for RTW Trip

I am currently preparing for a round the world trip, leaving next April, and am working our budget. I've posted about this previously but I've recently revised my numbers based on feedback and wanted to see if you all think this is on point.

I am traveling with my husband, so all of our lodging costs will be shared (unless we go dorm style). We are planning on staying in hostels, mostly aiming for a private room with shared bath but we will stay in a dorm if there is not a shared available. We hope to cook in, and eat street food/grocery food for the majority of the time but do want to eat out 2-3x times a week and have some drinks now and again along the way.

The following are our estimated costs per person, per country. In budgeting, I split our lodging costs in half (since we will share that cost) and I'm also hoping that traveling as a couple will help us save on grocery food, etc. I also made an assumption that the places we are staying for longer periods of time (Caunes-Minervois, Montejaque, Tremosine) will be cheaper since they are a.) not in major cities and off the main path somewhat, b.) we'll be able to shop more/cook ourselves. I'm not sure if this is actually true. Does anyone know if smaller towns in these countries are actually less expensive?

Also, these estimates do not factor in travel costs (i.e. planes, trains, and buses in between locations). I am budgeting for that separately. This is mainly just lodging + food + entertainment. We occasionally go to museums/attractions but mostly will just be exploring, wandering, hiking, etc.

Let me know what you think!

Portugal - $75 pp
Seville, Spain - $95 pp
Montejaque, Spain - $35 pp
Morocco - $27 pp
Madrid & Barcelona - $57 pp
Caunes-Minervois, France - $49 pp
Switzerland - $54 pp
Italy - $60 pp in cities, $37 pp in Tremosine for three weeks
Croatia - $30 pp
Greece - $40 pp
Istanbul - $65
India - $15
Thailand - $25 pp
Laos - $15 pp
Vietnam - $20 pp
Cambodia - $25 pp
New Zealand/Australia - $75 pp

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Onokara, Checking your costs, there are a few things that don't look right. If you think to do pretty much the same in every country, food and accommodation wise then normally Portugal is cheaper than Spain. Then in Spain Barcelona and Madrid can be more expensive than Seville, they are the 3 most expensive cities in Spain though. With around 65$pp you might be able to make it

Switzerland is more expensive than Spain, went there last year and prices higher on everything. Just the accommodation could be around 60$pp if you cook in the hostel then add around 20$ pp. eating out can also be expensive.

India/Thailand/Vietnam/Lao & Cambodia are very cheap to travel in however i think you have overestimated the cheapness and need to add £5 to 10 per day for these countries.

For food, accomodation and entertainment we spent the following amounts (in USD). Our travel style is cheap in terms of accomodation and food, but with maximum flexibility so we like to rent a car and see much of the country.

Croatia: $51 pp
--> Accommodation: in private apartments a little out of town, but with sea view and kitchen
--> Food: cooked ourselves, we only went to a restaurant once and went out a few times for a drink
--> Entertainment: visiting Krka NP, Plitvice NP, mountainbiking on Pag Islang, visiting towns (free) and relaxing on the beach (free)
--> I did not include our car rental in the aforementioned amount, which would bring it to $85 pp pd

Vietnam - $49 pp (incl our tailor made clothes in hoi an and its shipment back to belgium)
--> Accommodation: cheap hotels or hostels
--> Food: in hostels or local restaurants (our rooms did not have a kitchen)
--> Entertainment: cu chi tunnels, trip to Sapa and trip to Halong Bay

Cambodia - $37 pp (incl local bustrips from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Kep, and back)
--> Accomodation: hostels
--> Food: in hostels or local restaurants (our rooms did not have a kitchen)
--> Entertainment: Rabbit Island, Ankor Wat, Choeng Ek, visiting temples (incl tuk tuk driver)

New Zealand - $80 pp (due to expensive tours we took :-))
--> Accomodation: hostels
--> Food: cooked ourselves
--> Entertainment: 5 tours (incl. flight over Mount Cook, rafting, dolphin swimming, Doubtful Sound, 1 day Franz Josef trekking) and some smaller attractions
--> This amount only reflects our average spending on accomodation if we would have stayed in hostels all the time. In fact, we spent $120 pp pd if you include our camper van rental, fuel costs, internet costs, varia etc.

Australia - $55 pp
--> Accomodation: hostels
--> Food: cooked ourselves
--> Entertainment: 2 tours (Crocadile tour close to Kakadu NP & Winetasting in Barossa Valley) + entrance tickets for Kakadu NP and Uluru NP
--> This amount only reflects our average spending on accomodation if we would have stayed in hostels all the time. In fact, we spent $95 pp pd if you include our camper van rental (promotion), car rental, fuel costs, internet costs, varia etc.

Hope this helps, have fun!

I would agree that the budget for the SEA leg is a little of the tight side, I did a loop around Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and allowed $30 (USD) a day in each country. In Thailand we overspent by about $5-10 a day, Vietnam we were about spot on and Cambodia and Laos we came in underbudget on most dayy by a couple of dollars. This was for all food, activities and accommodation but not including travel, which cost us £150 all in for 6 weeks the whole way round. This was back in 2010 so you should factor in some inflation. We stayed in double rooms, mostly ensuite with prices ranging from $5 -$12 a night pp.
