Classic Kenya Safari with Exodus

Hi

Has anyone recently been on this trip with Exodus?

Im thinking of going next year and as someone whos never camped before im a bit unsure of what I might be getting myself into! I have asked for a brochure so I can check out the itinerary.

Also if anyone has any handy hints for a (female) safari novice I would be grateful.

Thanks for your help :)

C.

If Exodus is basic camping (and I think it might be) then you really should try camping somewhere else before committing to this trip. Personally I love camping but its not for everyone and camping in Africa is not really the best place to start. Find out about toilet and washing facilities at the camp sites - African toilets can be a challenge for Westerners and not really for the faint-hearted.

Hopefully people who have been on an Exodus trip can advise before you book.

They do worldwide travel. Try asking them who handles their safaris in Kenya, since they must have a local partner. Once you know that, I'm sure someone here will have something to say about them.

Hi

I haven't been on this trip but I have just booked it for next year! On the classic Kenya safari tour you do not camp as such, you stay in a 'luxury tented camp'. If you get a brochure it shows you a picture of it. I am not a camper and like my home comforts and it looks ok to me!

I was on the Exodus East Africa Safari tour (13 days) in August this year, in the middle of The Great Migration. That means high-season, and the Exodus trip seemed like a good value.

The short story is that I was not impressed. I've written them a note asking for comments before I publish a proper review of the trip, but the short version is that we had some great animal viewing, but that definitely was not because of anything Exodus did exceptionally well.

They make it a cheap trip, but you can get it cheaper AND better if you just head to Nairobi and/or Arusha and shop around for some good deals. More than a reasonable amount of time is spent sitting in a truck without making any interesting stops. During mornings and late afternoons, you'll be doing chores instead of going out on game drives or have time to explore. When you finally have time to do something, it will be dark, and you'll be confined to your tent and the nearest bar full of Europeans.

If you're interested, I can send you the link to a blog entry I'll publish in the near future. I've also put up a gallery of the photos I managed to take on my trip: [http://www.pvv.org/~bct/simba/|I was on the Exodus East Africa Safari tour (13 days) in August this year, in the middle of The Great Migration.
