Itinerary North India - Varanasi to Agra (and further)
Hello,We are traveling in a few weeks to India. We will be heading from Phokara, Nepal to North India and were looking for some advice.
1. How to best travel from Phokara to Varanasi?
2. Do you have any advise on places/sights to visit on the route from Varanasi to Agra?
3. Any other places which are worthwhile a visit (we plan to stay 2-3 weeks in total in India)?
NB. we have about a daily budget of EUR35 per person and travel as a couple.
Thank you very much for you help.

I'm not sure if buses run direct to Saunali or via Butwal from Pokhara, but I would anyway suggest at least ovenight and a day in Tansen, a lovely atmospheric and historic little town, also get a window seat, as the views on the Siddarth highway are stunning ! From Saunali there are direct buses to Varanasi which are quicker and more frequent than trains, though possibly not as comfortable. If you do take the Gorakhpur option, be very careful, this town is a den of thieves !UB.

@1&2. Thanks for the info on how/where to cross the border.@2. Thanks I'll consider them, the first impression is that they are definitely interesting.
Just to give a bit more detail on our interest. We like to visit some temples/architecture, but not to many. We like nature as well.
Furthermore, we are happy to head-off the Varanasi-Agra-Delhi-route (althouigh Varanasi seems a logical and interesting place give we come from Pokhara.
Finally, after India we will most likely go to Indonesia (Java or Bali to start at), what would be a good/cheap place (in North India) to take a flight from? Direct flights? or handier to do a stop-over?
Thanks for all your help.

since you are in varanasi... why not head to bodh gaya... definitely worth a visit, from there you could stop by ... allahabad (some forts and temples) than on to fatehpur sikri... (emperior akbar's capital) and finally you could head to gawllior or kanpur (temples and other historic monuments) before you descend upon agra.each destination is roughly about 4-5hrs and bus/train connections are convenient enough.
... 35€ is a comfortable budget and would do splendidly as long as there are no lavish expenses, you will need to alternate between budget travel and a decent room, or skip drinks
I suggest Bali... and mumbai would be the cheapest, just because of the volume of flights heading to SE from there.
