15Intrepid is great. But they've just had a bit of a major over haul and recruited many new guides. Can't vouch for their quality just yet. Intrepid focuses on fun and light tours. If you are looking for serious immersions in culture, check out http://indianexpeditions.in/ they are pretty darn good at what they do.

Few years ago during our Kerala trip we went to Cochin specially to see the Pardesi Synagogue which is the oldest Synagogue in India and a reminder of the history of Jewish settlements in India.
The Pardesi Synagogue is still well maintained in the area called "Jew Town" in Kochi but most Jewish faith settlers in India left for Israel long time back and unfortunately now even this very historic Synagogue in India is without a Rabbi and a proper service. But it will certainly be worth a visit if you have an interest in the history of Jewish settlements in India.

Great that you are going to India.
It will be amazing and will change your life if you are open to its charms.
My advice is break it in with your small tour and then go it alone.
If you hang around the areas where bpackers go:
Pahar ganj etc then you will meet lots of solo travellers and many females.
TRy the roof top café's and the small coffee shops.
There are so many delhi, calcutta etc...
I have met and travelled with so many folk that i have bumped into
on pahar ganj. its full of great folk that are out there doing it!
Let me know if I can help any more.

19Hi Torontomm, we were in Kochin in Feb/March and the synagogue was being refurbished by the state - didn't look too promising.

21Thanks all for your advice!
At the moment I am contemplating either Intrepid's 28 day North & south tour- anyone done this one? I like that it spends a bit of time in the national parks as well..
I've done a tour with Intrepid before and I like how they give you the freedom to roam around by yourself, not necessarily as a group. The only thing is that I know that a lot isn't included in their tour, and adds to the price so I don't know if I should opt for another company instead- anyone heard of g adventures?
Also, is mumbai a must see? And how long would one recommend for dehli?
